asana15 16,648
We all know Gaga's uneasy relationship with NY Times musical department critics - Jon Caramanica and Wesley Morris. She just can't, seems, do anything good by them. Today, she's venturing big time into a different medium (acting/movies), and, naturally, her output will be assessed by a different department of NY Times now. Yesterday, number one movie critic in the land (arguably) and NY Times Manohla Dargis put out an article regarding female roles in the movies screened at the TIFF. She's started with Nicole Kidman in "Distroyer" and then the next one up was Gaga in ASIB - ..Awards hysteria quickly set in after the premiere of “A Star Is Born,” the latest telling of one of Hollywood’s most enduring self-mythologies about stardom and sacrifice. Its director, Bradley Cooper, and Lady Gaga play musicians turned lovers hurtling toward radically different destinies. It opens in a few weeks, and I’ll have more to say about it then (it’s good). But soon after the movie had its first screenings, the usual cycle of acclaim and backlash was in motion. (Rinse, repeat.) Largely driven by the Oscar Industrial Complex, this yay-nay cycle doesn’t do movies or audiences any good, most obviously because it puts a movie’s shifting or nonexistent awards odds above art, culture, history... https://www.nytimes.com/2018/09/14/movies/toronto-film-festival-women.html What's important to me here, is that she will be reviewing ASIB and will have it closer to the release date. I'm for once really very much looking forward to it. @HitTheBoatWould it be the first time Manohla Dargis is reviewing a film with Gaga?
asana15 16,648
I don't know. It's still a bit overwhelming to say the least.... Film critics are returning home from the TIFF, and putting their thoughts and impressions from the festival on the virtual paper so to speak. Here's two predictions from the Indie Wire distinguished writers (not bloggers, not Twitter dwellers, not You Tube wannabes) Bill Desowitz and Anne Thompson regarding ASIB prospects come nominations time - Craft nominations (likely): Cinematography, Editing, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, Song. Oscar-nominated cinematographer Matthew Libatique (“Black Swan”) utilized hand-held, Steadicam, and long tracking shots for a naturalistic look that recalls the grittiness of the ’70s. But then he went more tactile for hopeful close-ups during the beginning of their relationship. Look for Gaga to get nominated for her powerful break out song, “Shallow,” or the wistful “I’ll Never Love Again” (or possibly both). Sound, too, was integral in keeping us contained inside the world of Jackson and Ally, and sound designer-mixer Steve Morrow provided seamless transitions without audible breaks, and achieved a propulsive soundscape that also benefits from the immersion of Atmos. Meanwhile, Oscar-nominated editor Jay Cassidy (“American Hustle,” “Silver Linings Playbook,” “Into the Wild”) makes it seem like a bitter-sweet dream in which painful reality intrudes before erupting like a nightmare. https://www.indiewire.com/2018/09/oscar-frontrunners-roma-first-man-a-star-is-born-the-favourite-crafts-1202002895/ Now, off to the big dance - ‘A Star Is Born’ and ‘If Beale Street Could Talk’ at TIFF: 18 Possible Oscar Nominations Between Them (Two tragic romances held Toronto audiences enraptured — but with Lady Gaga, the real star is born) At 32, Lady Gaga’s music career is in full bloom; she now has an Oscar Best Actress nomination in her sights as Ally, whose star rises as her alcoholic husband’s falls. Two original songs, hair-raising “Shallow,” which she sings the first time she steps on stage, and the movie’s closer, “I’ll Never Love Again,” could score Oscar nominations. The movie will dominate the Globe Musical/Comedy nominations. Likely Oscar nominations: Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, Adapted Screenplay, Editing, Sound Editing and Mixing, Song. https://www.indiewire.com/2018/09/a-star-is-born-if-beale-street-could-talk-romance-oscars-toronto-film-festival-bradley-cooper-lady-gaga-tiff-2018-1202002506/ WHEW... They are too good for them to not be promoted songs with videos, radio spins, peformances etc.
