sethrb101 4,523
This is just a thought I had while listening to ‘Til It Happens To You recently. It may or may not have struck me because I’m still bitter about her losing to S*m Sm*th and that mediocre song, but I digress... Do you think Gaga would have a better shot at snatching the Oscar for TIHTY had the song been nominated at last year’s Academy Awards or possibly even next year’s (given the climate of sexual assault awareness)? I think it definitely would’ve boosted her chances because the Academy might have wanted to make a statement that way (we all know how political it gets). However, if she had won this way, some probably would’ve called into question the legitimacy of her receiving the award—despite her deserving it no matter the climate at the time. What do you guys think?
SolidSnake 2,804
Who knows. We would need to see the other noms. Impossible to predict otherwise.
Miel 15,009
Hmm, maybe. I don't know. Granted, beyond the fact that I still seethe at its loss, I am super grateful that it was a big push for that conversation in mainstream industry politics and media. 3 points in and ready for more
Oriane 20,935
It would definitely have had more chances, now that it's "trendy" to talk about it and to show you're concerned about this issue. asana15 16,648
It's hard to say since neither the song title nor the songwriters are listed on the ballot. Only the movie title. The Hunting Ground problem was it's obscurity, that the voters had no idea what it is. They've head the song (if even), knew the songwriters/performer, but which nominee is it from?! Not that they bothered to find out either. ASIB's commercial success if there is one, will go a long way to help with nomination/name recognition if it makes it to the ballot. Sorry but that makes no sense, once the nominations are announced, the voters know what they are voting for.

They should, but they don't. Have you ever seen an Oscar ballot? Original song and original score have the movie titles only.

But the voters are strictly composers and songwriters (everyone votes only in their own category + everyone votes for Best Picture), so by the time they vote in the final round, they know which movie features which song, they can just look it up easily. The music branch of Academy you're referring to, is only voting to get the nominations - the final 15 and then the final 5. Once the nominations are announced, the entire Academy is voting on them. There's no exception to anything, except for the best picture the Academy uses preferential voting system instead of a simple majority. Each nomination on the ballot is voted on by the entire Academy. Different branches of the Academy are taking care of the nominations only. That's why she performed TIHTY for the PGA (producers guild) and other branches to increase the awareness of the song. Much maligned now Harvey Weinstein campaigned with the Academy brass to have the songwriters written on the ballot, but alas... Better luck with ASIB, I hope, this time around.
