rumours 45,521
A while back, Rolling Stone Magazine posted a list of the Top 100 Greatest Singers of all time. I figured it would be interesting to break down the list to see what females ended up on the list. The following female vocalists made it. Note: The number put in front of their name is where they ended up on the overall list. List #1 Aretha Franklin #17 Tina Turner #22 Etta James #28 Janis Joplin #29 Nina Simone #34 Whitney Houston #35 Dusty Springfield #42 Joni Mitchell #46 Patsy Cline #50 Bonnie Raitt #51 Gladys Night #56 Mavis Staples #58 Christina Aguilera #73 Dolly Parton #79 Mariah Carey #83 Patti Smith #84 Darlene Love #93 Annie Lennox #94 Karen Carpenter #95 Patti Labelle #98 Stevie Nicks #100 Mary J. Blige Source: https://www.ranker.com/list/rolling-stones_-100-greatest-vocalists-of-all-time/rolling-stone-lists Therefore, 22% of the 100 people are female. What are your thoughts on who was included? Are they missing anyone in your opinion?
DaftFameMonster 2,527
Why so few females? The female voice is much more beautiful in my opinion

She truly is a fantastic vocalist!

In terms of Christina, I was shocked she was on the list at all to be honest. If we are basing it off of vocal acrobatics, Mariah (circa 1990-1996) really was one of a kind. In my opinion, I never thought Christina in her prime was as good (no shade intended). In terms of Dolly, she's a totally different style of vocalist than Mariah. I would argue people like Joni Mitchell and Dolly Parton have more sincerity in storytelling and emoting than someone like Mariah. Therefore, I'd say Dolly's placement (along with people like Joni's, Stevie's, etc.) is justified in that she possesses both good vocal ability as well as the ability to convey emotion. Just my opinion though

Mr S 8,673
If this was made today, Beyonce would be #1 ahead of Whitney, Aretha, etc. Mariah has never been respected for whatever reason. I actually wasn't that surprised to see her so low. I personally would have her in my top 5, but I can see why critics wouldn't. She was never much of a live singer. Ziggy 11,870
I’m honestly surprised af that Ella Fitzgerald isn’t up there at all. The warbling quality of her voice? Damn. But I do love Nina Simone’s voice a little more anyway so I’m happy she’s represented. Deep female singers always have it hard and she was one tough broad. Same! I actually expected to not only see Ella on the list but also for her to be towards the top. Side note, I was also surprised Linda Ronstadt didn’t make the list. She could change a melody on a dime before bringing it right back to the original again. The way she was able to play with her voice so effortlessly. It’s amazing. Also agreed! I’m curious if they only cited non-theater acts because some Broadway singers have some pipes as well that got neglected on this list.
