Why do people praise Blackout?

don't get me twisted, i love Britney Spears but i've always wondered why pop culture forums herald Blackout as an amazing pop album

i'm eternally grateful for the national anthem Gimme More and some of the album tracks like Toy Soldier and Get Naked are great but is this a case of the album sounding so much better back in 2007?

personally i prefer some of the music from Circus and FF but i'm very open to hearing why this album has a great reputation

I prefer Circus over Blackout. Blackout has some mediocre lyrics but the production is very good. It has these dark R&B and electronica vibes which are sadly only on 2000's tracks. I would like a resurgence of this music and not mumble trap rap.

It's just so consistent with its great dance tracks :music: They sound grittier and darker than typical "pop" as well and each song has something special about it :flutter:

I think its because she was so overexposed at the time that generally people wrote the project off as her still kind of being a mess and phoning it in and blah blah. And she shaved her head and was in the tabloids for getting admitted for psychological issues and the conservatorship etc and that messy VMA performance that is now iconic. All the drama of her life in the tabloids ultimately overshadowed the music. So now that all this time has passed people can finally look back on Blackout as this encapsulation of that specific era of girls gone wild tabloid culture that was once so annoying and inescapable to them, it has become this like audio time capsule of that era imo. And its fun and unlike other Britney records doesn't try to slow down the tempo at any point for some faux sense of authenticity with a generic ballad, she just stays grimy on the dancefloor from start to finish.

THAT BEING SAID, I think people overrate its musical "influence" to hell. Musically I dont think its been even slightly influential. Blackout was a reflection of its time, Danja was timbalands protege. And the album ultimately sounds like Loose-era Nelly Furtado urban pop with a sprinkling of 80s synth that Gwen Stefani, Madonna, and Kylie had already dabbled in before her. When people say its "influential" I would argue its influence is not in the production but in where Britney was at. As i'd previously stated I think Blackout serves as an audible time capsule of a certain moment in popular culture and I think thats where its influence is. Britney being crazy and in the tabloid partially influenced The Fame, but I really dont think it specifically influenced Gaga musically per say.

In The Zone is the best Britney album in my opinion. Blackout is perhaps the fan favorite because of that urban electro pop sound that made the gays go crazy and it was released during Britney’s hardest moment of her career. Sure it is catchy and fun but to be honest it’s so overrated and noisy. Sometimes I have to skip most songs because I get bored of them. I do like Gimme More, Get Naked, Heaven on Earth but overall it’s pretty average.

I gotta say I sometimes wonder the same thing... It is a really enjoyable album to listen to, but I don't think any of its songs has really passed the test of time. Like, ask any stranger in the street about their favorite Britney songs, and I'm not sure anyone will really pick or remember anything at all from that record.

minus the INZ part (cus i haven't heard it in full yet), this is basically how i feel about it

i was 11/12 in 2007 so all the stuff and music that happened went right over my head cus i was too busy being a kid :poot: but when i listen to it now, i also skip a lot of the tracks cus it just sounds... 2007

Couldn't agree more. In the Zone is way better than Blackout. Toxic, Breathe on Me, Early Mornin', Everytime are all timeless even if they were released today, but I can't say the same for Blackout tho. :reductive:
