Why did they never make the rest of the dragon tattoo movies?

Cuz the first one didn't make enough money.

Opening credits for David Fincher's movies are usually cool.

Yes, Fincher is an absolute master at that.

I wanna say money issues, but the film actually did really well - not overwhelmingly well, but enough to justify a sequel. It stayed in development for ages, so I just think everyone went their separate ways and kinda forgot about it after a while.

Then the studio decided to adapt the 4th book with a totally different crew, that one's being shot at the moment with Claire Foy as Lisbeth.

Box office was $232 million and the cost was $90 million.

They almost tripled their budget..

Prometheus' opening sequence will forever be etched in my mind as the greatest of all time. The cinematography, the Icelandic landscape, the music, the clean font, and that GORGEOUS dark blue/grey filter that's present throughout the whole film make it so evident that such careful and heartfelt filmmaking went into making the greatest first impression. The opening itself let you know what tone you could expect and the scale that you were about to witness. And regardless of what you thought of the film, you knew you were going to be watching a very unique and visually stunning movie. Seeing this scene in the theatres sent chills down my spine.

Unfortunately, that's not how it works. If you wanna know why, I highly recommend this article: https://io9.gizmodo.com/5747305/how-much-money-does-a-movie-need-to-make-to-be-profitable

But if you're not interested, I'll just leave you with this: "If you think that The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo was a hit, then talk to MGM Holdings CEO Gary Barber. His company co-financed the film, and although it has generated about $231M at worldwide box offices he tells investors who own MGM’s unlisted shares that “it is below our expectations and we booked a modest loss.”" on whether or not he's going to co-finance the sequels: “assuming we can achieve better economics.
