Pretty interesting article written by Buzzfeed about Paris Hilton's drop from public eye. Looks at her inability to change with the times. It focuses a lot on what Kim Kardashian did "right" to go from being Paris' assistant, to having Paris work for her and her husband as a model for Yeezy.  It's also kind of cool how the article takes you through Paris' career. My only issue with it, they forgot to mention Paris Hilton My New BFF .

It's a long article so here are some excerpts.

The same industry — composed of reality television and gossip blogs — that aided and exploited Hilton's rise also eroded her celebrity. The Simple Life was, in fact, remarkably simple, a narrative playing up a caricature of Hilton that operated in a bubble apart from the real world. And while she was able to parlay that reality television persona into a lucrative fragrance and fashion brand (and a forever-iconic pop single, if not a full-fledged pop career), she didn’t keep up with the changes of the reality-celebrity landscape.

Instead, a new generation of reality personalities — from Real Housewives and Kardashians to Sur servers — figured out how to turn themselves into brands whose "real” lives were integral to their shows. Gossip blogs and social media feuds became parts of the plot, demanding a constant stream of content and convincing performances of authenticity. But Hilton only got caught being "real" (usually through an arrest, or friend feud) outside of her reality productions, and seemed unwilling to embrace the scandals of her own making as part of her brand or her onscreen narrative. The public soon grew bored.

Keeping Up With the Kardashians debuted in October 2007, as reality television audiences were beginning to demand a new kind of all-access pass. Where Hilton was aloof and artificial, the Kardashians seemed completely open, performing a kind of emotional nudity. They happily cataloged nearly every moment of their lives

When Paris finally caught on to this new expectation of reality stardom with 2011’s The World According to Paris, on Oxygen — a closer look at Hilton’s life in Los Angeles, which even featured vulnerable scenes with her mom, Kathy — it was too late for anyone to care.

Hilton once wrote that mystery is the key to fame. If you only give people tidbits, she noted, “They will want to know everything about you.” She always relied on the public’s willingness to fill in her blanks from afar. But as reality television celebrity in the social media age came to demand the illusion of 24/7 exposure, keeping secrets as a strategy turned into the most passé thing of all. Perhaps Hilton never realized — or minded — that holding on to them might also mean the public would just stop caring.

I think one thing is that Paris Hilton is 37 now. A lot of her popularity was based on antics of an early to mid 20-something year old girl. She's practically a middle-aged woman. 

 

When she got her first big spotlight in the 2000 Vanity Fair article, Paris was 19. 

By the time Keeping Up with the Kardashian started, Kim was 27 years old. She was more mature and never based her career on being a college aged party girl. Therefore, its been easier for her to age in the spotlight, than Paris

It’s smart but at the same time it’s a 50/50 formula because it’s not working out for her as much anymore & the same goes for Gaga, they want these celebrities to show emotional truths and to bare their souls.

I think (at least for me) the whole family aspect of the Kardashians is what has made them last so long. There are so many personalities and the fact that they're all in the public eye at different ages and different relationships- it's fascinating. And it's fascinating watching them be normal with each other despite money, fame, etc. I think if it was just Kim and not KUWTK, she might not have lasted. The family brand has really boosted everyone's careers

That’s true but I think celebs have to balance both aspects out. 

A good example of balancing mystery & emotional truth, I think, would be Beyoncé. She’s all about mystery inbetween album cycles, so much so that she hardly ever posts on social media. But when she drops her album, her emotional truth is revealed, a la LEMONADE: where we found out that her marriage isn’t perfect like everyone thought. 

I think Gaga just go bored of keeping that balance, since she doesn’t desire fame anymore.

I would also agree with Beyoncé but at the same time a part of me thinks that some of the things she does are just for publicity

The Kardashian’s did it correctly. I’m not their biggest fan, but they definitely made the “famous for being famous” model work by coming off as real people with real problems. 

Paris Hilton came off as a total snob, and basically represented all that was excess in a time of recession. How long was that going to work?

Well Paris is the epitome of what people call "white trash", so it's no surprise her 15 minutes of fame are over. She is still filthy rich, so I'm not feeling sorry for her.
