He's trying to replicate the 'whispery breathy' vocals verbatim from the song. His vocals are drowned out by everything else. That's just bad sound checking on SNL's behalf. Maybe because it's live they don't sound check and get the levels right, idk, but I don't think this was a fault on his part. Just listen to this part of My My My at 2:48 where he sings full voice and he's still drowned out. And he sounded so good on The Good Side, even though he was crying   the end killed me. Aside from that, I know that he's a great singer. Listen to any of his other acoustic performances I'll be myself until they fūcking close the coffin.
