StrawberryBlond 14,776
19 hours ago, Alexander Levi said: I mean rock and Jazz were rooted in black culture and who do we know as the King Of Rock? A white man. And who are some of the biggest names in Jazz? White men. Sure, I believe it's fine to have white people be involved with these genres - my high school jazz band consisted of ALL white people. But we must remind people about the roots of the genre and why they were so important to the culture. There's even examples from the past such as Saartjie who was a black woman that was forced to join the circus. Her figure was then copied by the fashions of the day and white women were applauded for their tight corsets and large bottoms - but black women were considered ugly. It might be a new term, but it's not a new concept. Was that really at the forefront of people's minds in the 70's, though? I'm sure they had bigger stuff to worry about then. I don't know, it just seems like that stuff is brought up now because we're looking for things to be offended by and because times have moved on so much, there's little else to complain about except the past. And no one's stopping black people from making rock or jazz. It's not white people's fault that they don't want to pursue these genres like they used to. Hip hop's contemporary, cool and hot on the charts, so, naturally, that's what the newer generations of blacks want to get into if they want to do a genre that appeals to their racial origins. It's their choice. And trust me, no one's under any delusion of who started these genres. It's only assumed that white people are ignorant about it and it annoys me like crazy. Were the fashions of the day really inspired by Saartjie Baartman, though? She was paraded around London in 1810 and the bustle didn't come into fashion until the late 1860's. Saartjie was considered unattractive and uncivilised to those at the time, she was looked at for purely shock value, so why would women have wanted to look like her and why would men have dictated those fashions for the same reason? That's all I was asking - if it was the same concept under a different name. I know that I hadn't even heard the term "appropriation" whatsoever until 2 years ago (which is unusual for me seeing as I have such a broad vocabulary) so that's how alien this term was when it was presented to me. 19 hours ago, Craven Moorecox said: Not to attack you, but how old are you and where are you from btw? It just seem like you aren’t aware of many issues... I'm 28 and I'm from Scotland. And trust me, I am well aware of the issues you speak of, I've just got a different way of looking at them than you do and how I'm told to view them. The internet became a full-time fixture for me since about the age of 16, so that filled in any gaps in knowledge that I wasn't taught from school or got from the media. YouTube has been a great way of educating myself about the vast swathes of opinion regarding race, especially recently. Back when I used to be a much more textbook liberal, I absorbed all the messages about getting different races to say their piece and represent themselves and to be respectful and racially sensitive was a big part of my attitude. I mean, you used to find me waxing lyrical about how only black women with the most Westernised features are the ones bigged up by the media. It's only recently that I've seen really overblown opinions about supposed racial oppression in this day and age. Claims that issues that I thought affected everyone now apparently only affect POC. Claims that something is a racial issue when it isn't. Claims that white people don't possess the knowledge to understand all this. And because I speak up about it, I'm considered racist and ignorant, just because I've pointed out the flaws in logic, with facts into the bargain. By the way, I have a degree in Religious Studies and I also studied sociology, anthropology and philosophy while I was there. I think I know a thing or two about different cultures and different viewpoints. Quite frankly, I'm sick and tired of having to prove myself to strangers on the internet about how intelligent, educated and socially aware I am. Because I've always been interested in the wider world around me, I've been doing a damn sight better than a lot of other people for years. 14 hours ago, Alexander Levi said: And I don’t want to seem mean in anyway, but just because a term is coined in a certain time period doesn’t mean it is new information. I mean racism and appropriation have DEEP roots in America that started hundreds of years ago - we can’t act like these issues are just being brought up today. And people have cared about the color of skin for an entertainer way BEFORE the 2010’s - just because it goes unspoken doesn’t mean that it doesn’t happen. I didn't say that these issues have only just been brought up today, just that the idea of segregating everything by race and calling out those who don't is getting far fetched and too much. I know that an artist's skin colour has been a source of contention for years but what I meant was that white artists weren't criticised for doing black genres at the time unless they were hilariously bad at it. As long as you were good, nobody cared. But lately, it seems like, even if you're good, you should get criticised for using black music to be successful. 13 hours ago, edgy said: Just because you haven't heard of it before (with or without a term) doesn't mean it never existed before you came along ... It most definitely was and continues to be a big deal to those marginalized communities that were affected. Those conversations were most definitely going on around those times ... it's only more prominent now because of the platform that social media has given to those communities to shine light on these issues. The reason why perhaps you've never heard it happening because was because you weren't listening. I never said it didn't exist "until I came along." Other people brought it to my attention, obviously. They invented it, not me. But you have a point, social media gave a platform to opinions that maybe weren't aired to the many before now. Trust me, I was listening. I've always been listening. I'm not an uneducated, ignorant white girl. These "grievances" that I'm hearing now are just so far removed from what I think is important or even something exclusively affecting non-whites.
