H&M Store in South Africa vandalized

How in the world did these people think this was a solution? I mean, seriously. Guess who has to clean up your huge mess? The employees who work there, who have lower level job positions and who have NOTHING to do with putting together the marketing/advertising campaigns for H&M. I feel terribly for those employees.

Or some white people want so badly to be oppressed, so they take any criticism too personally and again call minorities “butt hurt” instead of trying to understand why something is racist, because they never experienced racism by themselves.

Yeah it is funny because you again separate black and white when you argue about this. Like only black people can be offended by this! Really! As a white man I was honestly extremely offended by the hoodie. But I’m not going to go and trash a store over it. Is that because I’m white as well? No, I don’t think that’s the case. But you just assume what you want to continue to justify your flawed point of view.

Let me bring out my history book on this one. South Africa has a long standing history with racial issues. A once fully black African country that was colonized by the the Netherlands (country that played a big role in the slave trade and colonization) is now controlled by wealthy white people. In many parts of South Africa, black south Africans are treated as second class citizens.

Do I think what they did was right or justified? No! But do I understand there is a lot racial tension there? Yes! Don’t say this is a little issue if you don’t understand what it means to be oppressed or had history of oppression by another race

I agree with this, but knowing H&M who have quite a diverse workforce it will most likely be black employees cleaning this up. What resolve is there in that? I don’t think anybody is belittling the issue but more the reaction. It’s things like this that stop progress being made.

I’m saying it is impossible for you to be empathetic about black issues if you are white. Empathy means you know how it feels because your went through the exact same issues. Relating your experiences with discriminating is  sympathizing since it is not the same type of discrimination. I have sympathy for white people who get labeled privileged or a racist when they are not. Do I empathize with them? No because I have never been a white person so I don’t understand to extent those terms hurt them.

I disagree. Empathy isn’t characterised by the situation. If that were the case you could argue that if I was half white, half black I would be able to empathise with both sides of the argument. You could also argue that individually nobody else could ever understand what anyone ever goes through. To be honest I feel like a lot of the arguing around this debate especially that I have seen has to do with this. When people feel as if others don’t understand it builds an anger, anger results in acts of aggression and it’s this cycle that stops anyone from actually creating meaningful progress. 

For me, empathy is based on emotions. We are both human, and I am sure that regardless of skin colour, we have shared the same emotions before regarding issues like this. This is what allows me to be empathetic for you and others, not the colour of my skin, which shouldn’t be mentioned in the first place.

This whole situation was so overblown. Carelessness on H&Ms part was somehow equated to actual full-on racism. It was very obviously just an oversight  I'm not sure how they missed it, but it really doesn't warrant a response like this especially when its just minimum wage workers cleaning it up that have no influence on the people in head office.
