Bowie's pianist speaks out on Gaga

Slayer

He literally took the words out of my mouth.

As a Bowie fan, who loves Gaga as much as I loved (and continue to love) Bowie, her performance was awful. It was the Bowie equivalent of someone doing a Gaga tribute act and only singing Poker Face and Million Reasons.

She didn't wanna do the performance anyway, though (she admitted this) so I can sort of forgive and forget it. Backstage, and with the tattoo and her listening to Blackstar while crying, I knew what she was really feeling at that time, and it was sadness and the need to mourn.

Nile Rodgers took the words out of my mouth with today's statement. He's right. It would've been amazing if she'd sang something at her piano.

At least this guy was nice about it compared to other people that spoke of it. Gaga’s  heart was so pure in the performance she wanted to honor him in a celabratory way. It’s not for everyone but I loved it! ❤️

I can't remember it word-for-word, but she did say it. It was during an interview with Diane Warren. I think she also mentioned it when addressing Duncan Jones' (Bowie's son) criticism of it.

She had a completely different idea for the performance before Bowie died. It was probably too late to change it around too much. My idea of the perfect tribute, her at her piano, would've been a waste of the money she/they'd invested in the Intel technology.

That magic thing is bullshit!

Gaga did it right. Sure Lorde did it her way and her performance was great. But what Gaga did was different. She performed in a way she thought he would have done it.

Don't know if it makes sense but she did it the way she saw him. She wanted to transmit the magic and message through the perspective she had on him!

To be honest, I knew Bowie but I never knew his music besides one or two tracks. And thanks to Gagas "bowielike" performance I got to not only know some more and gain interest but I think I really saw HIS message.

Now 2 years later after watching some of his old performances, it feels like Bowie took Gaga's body that night to perform a last time.

A tribute should honor the artistry of the artist that died not that of the one performing :fthis:

It was too much about Intel and what she could do on stage and too little about Bowie. It was unfortunate but it's in the past.

I think the problem with Gaga sometimes is that she has so many creative ideas that she kind of throws everything at the wall to see what will stick. I know she's not exactly the 'less is more' kind of artist (except for Joanne :triggered:), but I can see where this guy is coming from when saying she went overboard.

Sometimes I think she is overflowing with ideas and needs a hand in honing then and selecting which ideas work best. That’s what her team is for methinks.

I didn’t see the issue with the Bowie performance persay but that’s my two cents on what you said.

There appears to be two camps. It all depends on what kind of funeral you want for yourself.

Some people want everyone dancing at their funeral, remembering the fun times, the joy and crazy side of life. That is me. That is Gaga.

Others want their funeral to be a serious occasion, without dancing and only quiet reflection.

Each to their own.

You know it had to be a very rough time for her.. the determination that woman has.. I just can’t imagine..:saira: personally, I had a wonderful time watching her that night. She was gorgeous and those orange visuals really did it for me!! :rockstar: MY STAR!!

People are still digging at her for this 2 year old performance that she put her heart and soul into? Lame. :triggered:

The interview you're referring to was published by NME in 2016. ;)

“I really did not want to do it when they first called me because it was so soon after [Bowie’s death] and I felt very uncomfortable, but I did my very best to put together something that I hoped would be the showstopper of the night,” she says now. Did Jones’ comments hurt? “Yeah. It did. It did hurt,” she says slowly. “But what are you going to do? I can’t… it’s his father, you know?”

That's how you do constructive criticism!

I don't think the performance was bad at all, but I agree it wasn't stellar either and I think it had to do with the fact that it was too many songs and too many things happening. I don't think we've ever seen a Gaga performance this clogged with ideas, not even in 2009 - 2014.

The McQueen tribute for example, now THAT was something. The Bowie one done could have been done better, I agree.

Even though I agree with his criticisms, her heart was in the right place.

I think it may have been the wrong time to do this kind of a performance, of Bowie as essentially Ziggy Stardust. I think it seemed to people like it was a... parody when something more toned down would have been more appropriate.  This type of performance is ok but it was probably too soon after is death for it.
