it's always been big in the US it just wasn't allowed to chart in the 90s cuz of chart rules. 

Then the US charts include radio, which the UK ones don't, so its made it harder for the song to chart higher every christmas, once it was allowed to chart. 

But now that streaming has become big, its helping the song climb the chart this year. It also seems like there's more interest overall in the song this year.

Your question has been answered but just to also make sure you get this: IT IS HUGE LIKE LITERALLY GIGANTIC HUGE LIKE FOR REAL IN THE US  Literally 90% actually no, 98% of America would/should know it cause it's overplayed (in a good way) af. You can't listen to the radio, playlist, etc. during the season without hearing this song to the point elders and youngsters know it. 

So yeah it IS a "thing" but just those types of things that didn't reach top ten despite being gigantically popular
