Gaga Was a Gimmick

Now I know I'm gonna get flamed for posting this (and quite frankly, y'all can fight me behind this), but I believe "Gaga" prior to Cheek to Cheek and Joanne was a gimmick ...

We know that Gaga had talent as a vocalist and a pianist prior to C2C and Joanne, but the general public only saw Gaga as somebody who made catchy pop music and wore eccentric fashion. Now, don't get me wrong, I love that stuff, but we know that all of that was the result of Nicola's styling, Troy's management, and Laurieann's choreography. Powered by her talents as a musician, her old team created a modern pop icon that created headlines through the use of gimmicks designed to attract attention. What the GP saw and heard in those eras was an image that Gaga and her team manufactured (and embraced) for mass consumption.

I'm not saying that there wasn't a sense of authenticity in those eras, but as we saw throughout her journey through ARTPOP, Gaga was tired of having her artistry and talent being overshadowed and co-opted by the gimmicks that albeit brought her to fame in the first place, was tainting public perception of her once she reached the threshold into overexposure during the Born This Way era. And because of this, Gaga did a total 180, parted ways with her old team and formed a new one (Brandon as her stylist, Bobby as her manager, and Richy as her choreographer), and recorded a jazz album with Tony Bennett and an album dedicated to her late aunt.

So what does this mean going forward? For me, it means that Gaga is ready for the next evolution in her career. Having gone through the highs and the lows of fame and through the difficult experiences with cutting ties with those that very close to her but were toxic for her wellbeing, I believe that LG6 will be a career-changing moment for her. Now that the general public (e.g. your mother, your co-workers and your Republican neighbor) knows that Gaga has way more to offer than the gimmicks that was attributed to her early in her career (do you notice how audiences at her random acoustic performances whistle and cheer before she's even finished? :diane:), Gaga's next metamorphosis awaits and to me, I'm hyped.

(in b4 y'all say this title is a gimmick :selena:)

if gimmicks brought us iconic performances and videos, gag-worthy red carpet outfits and Gaga herself, then I love a good gimmick :lolly:

THIS. Gaga was never her. I feel like it was just to get her foot in the door.

I'm personally okay with whatever direction she decides to go from here tbh.  She's already given us 4 boppy albums that we can go back to and awesome music videos.

I'm actually excited to see how she continues to reshape her image.

Sometimes it can help you stand out in your debut, within 10 years I know more iconic things that associated with Gaga compared to other pop stars :laughga: but hopefully now less people will say “oh I didn’t know that Lady Ga Ga could sing” and appreciate her true artistic self

I think alot of it was Gaga herself, she knew how to attract attention and really bring a pop art performance art aspect into what she did.   But I also think she was intentionally creating a "character", in part to help isolate and mask her own insecurities.

It worked too well though.  She came into the world in her "Ziggy Stardust" phase and then had to fight to get out of it.  Some fans still won't let her go.

She literally talked about this at JWT last night, I’m sure she says it at every show - that people always say she’s changed but that it’s always been her authentic self.

People change and so does artistry. Are you the same person you were 10 years ago?

I think her eccentric nature certainly gave her a foot in the door but I believe her vision and artistic integrity has always been there.

Girl have you seen her Instagram feed lately? Bloody Mary performance at JWT?? :madge:

Gaga is still as "Gaga" as ever.

It's not a gimmick, it is who she is as an artist. Sure maybe her approach is evolving due to time and team changes  but that does not make the way she was before a gimmick. :madge:

I'm actually low key offended you would even say that as a LM :bye:

- edit -

And no I'm not an ass-kissing delulu fan, I just genuinely believe in Gaga's artistry and vision
