Caca 1,414
“Americano” is a song off Born This Way, and stands out for both its Latin influences and lesbian love story. This was her first proper collaboration with Fernando Garibay and White Shadow. During an interview with Vogue, Gaga described the song as: "A big mariachi techno-house record, where I am singing about immigration law and gay marriage and all sorts of things that have to do with disenfranchised communities in America…It sounds like a pop record, but when I sing it, I see Edith Piaf in a spotlight with an old microphone." This song was written as a response to Proposition 8 and Arizona immigration laws. Let's get into the decoding then shall we? I met a girl in east LA In floral shorts as sweet as May East LA is known for having the largest Hispanic population in the US so she most likely met a Hispanic woman. This line also establishes the subject matter of the song. It’s about Gaga loving a girl, and there’s a spice of exoticness to accomplish it. She sang in eights in two Barrio chords Eights is a type of time signature in music. The most common eights is 6/8 time (an example being “Row row row your boat”). Eights flow nicely and are home to some beautiful songs, meaning she sang in a very melodic, beautiful way. We fell in love But not in court The illegal immigration and laws against gay marriage prohibit them from getting married. Mi corazón me duele por mi generación Our generation has come so far with accepting gay rights, yet there are people that still show hatred towards the LGBT community. If you love me, we can marry on the West Coast Referring to California, which was one of the first states to legalize gay marriage. On a Wednesday, en un verano, en Agosto Proposition 8 in California was passed on Wednesday, August 4th, banning gay marriage in California. I don't speak your I don't speak your languagono (la la la la la la la) Language means culture here, Gaga refuses to understand or practice homophobia, which is very prominent in hispanic countries. I don't speak your (don't speak your) I don't speak your (won't speak your) Jesus Cristo (la la la la la la la) She doesn’t understand, nor does she want to understand your religion. Another implication is that that the Jesus she believes in, who believes in love for everyone, is not the same “Jesus Cristo” than the one taught about by the Christian Church. I will fight for, I have fought for how I love you (la la la la la la la) I have cried for, I will die for how I care (la la la la la la la) She will fight for the right to love the woman she loves. The way she sings “fight for” sounds a bit like “file for” which could be a subtle reference to submitting a Form I-130 or a Form I-129F thus sponsoring her lover for a family-based immigrant visa for the USA, which would allow a foreign national (and possibly an illegal immigrant if the right hoops were jumped through) a legal and possibly permanent stay in the US. This ties into the theme of immigration also present in the song. In the mountains, las campanas, están sonando (la la la la la la la) Guess what kind of bells. Don't you try to catch me Don't you try to catch me no, no, no, no I'm living on the edge of Living on the edge of the law, law, law, law Don't you try to catch me Don't you try to get me no, no, no, no Don't you try to catch me Living on the edge of the law, law, law, law She doesn’t want to be caught and tied down by "the man" because she’s having too much fun. The lesbian relationship in the song is still very much “on the edge of the law,” meaning that even our own government has not yet fully recognized the legitimacy of same-sex relationships. Gaga is also speaking about immigrants crossing the american border to try and find a better life. She is physically saying that these people are living on the edge of the law. meaning risking their lives, for a better future. What do y'all think? Leave your feedback in your responses! Also, what song should i do next? (It could be by any artist, not just Gaga) Mrs. Caca's career found dead in a ditch, re-evaluation process started.
