I definitely admit that lyrically and thematically, Witness has some low points, but overall I find it to be one of her more interesting projects. It feels like she's more in control of her vision and aspiring to be more than a teen pop artist. You can see her growth in songs like Witness, Roulette, Deja Vu, Power, and Pendulum. Had she followed up CTTR with Witness and Roulette I feel the album would have had more longevity despite a continued struggle with sales. Bon Apettit and Swish Swish are fun, but also demean the message she attempted to portray as she marketed the album. With the tough competition (Gaga, Lorde, Lana, Kesha, and others [not to mention the male pop artists]), it's really not surprising to see her miss out at the end of the day.
