She sold around 800k first day and those weren't pre-oders from target as far as I know. She has a good marketing team, creating and faking streams like Jay z and having deals with Samsung and give your albums for free and saying that it sold 1m in one week, is cheating. Remember that her album is not on streaming sites , the GP is buying her album too.
Andrea B 16,750
also I know this guy, he's a taylor hater he's basically making drama out of nothing since real and normal people are buying the album and not companies or bots, its not a scam nor cheating.... its marketing. NIghtmareElm 2,606
The Ticketmaster Verified Fan is NOT a scam. You do not have to buy anything. You can literally just watch the videos posted for so many times to get boosts. Purchases are just to get a faster boost. It's a great thing. That way bots and scalpers do not buy all the tickets then sell them at double the price. December 3-8, only fans that registered can buy the tickets. So the prices stay the same. $50-$350 is not really bad. Good marketing is not cheating. In an age where a lot of people steal albums and streaming, it's really hard sell a million albums. These days artists are lucky to sell 500K. Putting the album only on sale with no streaming as well as different forms of the physical album is a great way to sell and get people to actually buy the album. More artists need to start doing this. Before streaming and illegal downloading, selling a million in the first week wasn't as impossible as it is today. Why? The only way you could listen was to go to the store and buy the album.

sipthistea 21,099
I see Taylor Swift like a great businesswoman, like Madonna. I don't want to compare them artistically 'cause I find Madonna to be more artistically daring and profound, but they share that business vision (Big brand, partnerships). Their goal is to be BIG, and that's their priority. They have a team that manages and calculates every move, so that this whole machine can work. Therefore, this doesn't come as a surprise. It's an extension of that. I do think she's scamming her fans so that the album is regarded as 'influential' and 'acclaimed' for its sells. But it's just the result of a well calculated marketing strategy. I don't know if that's cheating, but it's a big screen to make her 'art' look bigger than it is. StrawberryBlond 14,862
This scheme is even more elaborate than I initially thought. I also didn't know she had all these photos to collect with 1989. The fact fans can't even choose which poster they get, meaning they might get sent duplicates that they don't want is really bad. I'm all for ideas to encourage people to buy physical copies but it goes too far when there's an element of duping involved or a "collect the whole set" idea going on.The whole thing reminds me of really manipulative tactics that manufactured teenybopper types do, things that exploit a young, impressionable fanbase who want to support their fave to the extreme. When you're young, supporting your favourite artist can be one of the focus points of your life, when you have very few responsibilities, it's easy to let hobbies and fun dominate. An adult, on the other hand, won't be here for such overspending nonsense. It's just so clear who these marketing schemes are targeted to, I think it's pretty despicable. I'd really like to know the real sales without all these multiples bought by the same fan. Swifities have proven themselves to be nothing if not loyal, so who knows how many copies have been sold that wouldn't normally be? It just astounds me how afraid this woman is to flop in the current age. She sees all the pop females flopping, she sees all females in general (except Beyonce and Adele) really struggling, she sees former powerhouses like Gaga and Katy, not even selling 1 million in the US anymore, she sees album sales hit a new low and going gold is now seen as an achievement, she sees artists having to resort to tour ticket bundles to sell tickets and albums. She knew she was heading the same way and couldn't take it. Even if it meant an eyebrow-raising scheme that appeared to drain fans bank accounts, she just had to be on top. She's bought into her own hype and then some.
