Why I don't think Taylor's strategy will work in her favor

so we all know how miss tay decided not to release her music onto streaming services until next week. in her perspective, this is what will happen

>someone wants to listen to her album

>looks it up on spotify

>woops, not on spotify

>guess i'm gonna have to spend 15$ to buy it now

while that might work for a small number of people, the most likely scenario is

>someone wants to listen to her album

>looks it up on spotify

>woops, not on spotify

>to the pirate bay it is!

now, obviously she knew that people would still pirate her album. however, it seems like she didn't take into account how important these initial streams would be.

moreover, illegaly downloading the album might result in 3 separate scenarios:

1. listen to the album illegally, then when it is on spotify switch to that

2. listen to the album illegally, and since it's already in your music library, you won't bother to look it up to stream it

3. listen to the album illegally, and when it's finally on itunes you'd have been bored of it and won't bother streaming

all these cases, while not gaining her any sales, are actually decreasing her streams for no reason.

as a result, when the album does come out on streaming platforms, the only people listening would be her swifties trying to boost her sales, or random people who hadn't known about the album earlier, and who'll just give it a listen. by making her album available only through purchase or piracy, she's lost a TON of streams in the long run: all her swifties who would have bought the album and streamed to increase numbers either way, all the people who pirated it and continue to listen to the pirated version, all the people who pirated it but won't bother with it anymore, all the people who would have found it had it been promoted on spotify.

i think taylor is just underestimating the importance of streams today. i just don't see how her move would be beneficial in the long run. it might give her a bigger head start but longevity is always better than a flash in the pan.

She should just suck it up and put it on for streams.

This is why payola exists for

And if it's not enough, they'll have tour bundles. And they can figure out new ways to increase those numbers until people get tired of having to listen to her everywhere.

I don’t think she cares when she is gonna get 1 million + sales in the first week.

this post is kind of about why she should care.

Releasing it on streaming services the second week might prevent her album from having a drop on the charts...

I don't think this is true. I think a huge portion of the millions of people that are going to buy the album in the first week wouldn't buy the album if they didn't have to. That's just a reality. She is benefitting from keeping it off streaming for the first week because there's so much demand for it.

99% of her demographics doesn't know what the pirate bay is, or how to download something illegally at all. Trust me, if they can't find it on a streaming service, they will either buy it or won't listen at all (until it's available on spotify). It's a great strategy but only people like Taylor/Adele/Beyonce/maybe Drake can afford it.

I think she’s respectable to do that. Streaming is taking power away from artists and making album releases seem way too customary and impersonal. By doing this she has the balls to claim that her work is important enough to own a physical copy and i’m sure her fans are loyal enough to want to purchase it/place it on their shelf. She’s probably one of the only few who can pull it off with huge sales in this digital age though.

that is possible, but man, the strategy has been made by a label and trust me they know what they're doing. It's a complete study of different strategies with calculations etc... If they chose this strategy, it's prob gonna work this way. They wouldn't take any risk of wasting money

Does her album really cost 15$? I wouldn't even buy the Thriller album with that price :selena:

It is standard CD price for todays. ARTPOP cost as much as well.

Oh okay I didn't know. This is why people download it illegally tbh. I also found a vinyl album of Thriller for 10 euros which to me is more worth it but to each their own :awkney:

Also, all theories been cracked. Her sales are exploding.

Biggest pre-order ever on Target. And causing lag to Apple server because of high demand for the album are enough to show that. Ordinary artist can't really cause lag to Apple servers like that.

I am not surprised if the album will debut on high position on Billboard
