Sorcerer 12,518
It is going for critical acclaim because it is "dramatic", "intimate" and "brash" modern pop

Then Joanne was slammed. LA Times even compared Taylor to Bob Dylan. I guess I just don't care about critical reception anymore. Son of a...I had no idea these 3 publications were the same ones that gave Joanne mixed-negative reviews. How can any publication worth their salt put down an artist who not only plays instruments and writes her own songs but can sing into the bargain as well as write songs about a variety of meaningful topics...but praise an artist who plays her own instruments and writes her own songs but can't sing overly well and whose lyrics mainly revolve around boys, revenge and playing the victim? This is why I chose not to become a professional critic. They're fake as hell. Slant in particular have always been very hard on female artists, it means a lot to get 4 stars from them when you're a female. To get that level, you have to be a good all-rounder. Taylor is not a good all-rounder. There's got to be some level of payola going on here. I really can't work out what these mostly male, middle-aged, straight critics could possibly see in her girly, childish, bland music complete with young fanbase. They've never gushed over other females with the same criteria before. In fact, if you were that kind of artist, that meant that when it came to the reviews, you just had to cover your eyes because critics never liked this stuff. boyerased 2,886
Scores reflect the albums, not how talented the artists are or what their abilities are. Of course quality is subjective, but separate the artist from their works.

I mean what's better indicator, unless they have ghostwriters? What's the point in separating the artist from their work when it's literally the thing that is a proof and a reflection of their artistry? We have Gaga who's been an ever evolving artist and one of the most versatile out there and we have Swift who has, well ... nice melodies and has been singing about boys and love for over 10 years now. You can get frustrated when you see that a clearly better artist is put down when they don't deserve it.

When artists become stagnant like that, their music becomes so boring. If an artist wants to make truly good music, they can't think they're invincible. 2 hours ago, Kimihiro said: Scores reflect the albums, not how talented the artists are or what their abilities are. Of course quality is subjective, but separate the artist from their works. But they can reflect those things. If an artist can't sing, their album will sound unlistenable. If their choice of production is bad, it can ruin good lyrics. All these things bring down the score. And no, you can't separate the artist from their work, particularly when it's Taylor, who writes about her own personality and experiences, she doesn't write about anything outside herself. So, yeah, she is her music. I can't separate them if she's making it very clear in her music that we should be correlating them. When the likes of Chris Brown had made an album after beating up Rihanna and included lyrics about girls giving him a hard time and calling them bitches, well, it's hard to say that's just his artistic expression and we should separate that from the artist, right? 14 minutes ago, ExMachina said: Scores reflect the albums and albums reflect how talented the artists are at their songwriting skills. You can get frustrated when you see that a clearly better artist is put down when they don't deserve it. You got it. It disappoints me that critics aren't bringing up the fact that she's been singing about the same subjects since she was a teenager and has made no real progression in her work despite being almost 30. Guaranteed if it were any other female, she would be called out for it. Women are routinely criticised for putting out the same kind of music over and over (Ariana even had to delay her Dangerous Woman album because so many people said Focus was too much like Problem and wasn't as good), yet male artists who haven't changed from day one get praised for remaking the same album every time. Gaga changes her sound with every album and gets called insincere. I bet if she did stay the same, she'd get criticised for not experimenting. She just can't win. Women have to be practically superhuman in this industry, they've got to be good at everything to guarantee good scores. How Taylor gets away with all her faults is beyond me.
