No, Montreal is. I wish people would stop assuming all people in Quebec are rude like Montrealers :saladga:

It's like assuming all people in France are rude based on having had bad encounters with a few Parisians :awkney:

As a French Canadian from New Brunswick, I can understand the struggle trying to maintain a language and culture that comes with it. However, these are Come To Mama lyrics and the idea of the flag was more about unity as a nation. Being offended that she did not use the Québec flag because she was in Québec pretty much goes against the message she was going for by holding the flag. Keep in mind that people from other provinces drove and flew to the show, so the audience was not only made up of Québequois.

Also, I'm from a French-speaking town and worked in tourism during the summer. If a tourist arrived and initiated a conversation in English, it would be pretty disrespectful of me to respond by saying that, by speaking to me in English, they are oppressing me and are being insensitive.

Furthermore, I was there yesterday and she spoke French throughout the show. She made that effort. So I think there's nothing to get offended over.

This is how the Anglos are slowly invading us: They say that there must be respect for everyone and free choice of language, this is the typical neoliberal Pro-Anglo-Canadian way of thinking. They say people should have the free choice of language. Yes and what did happen when we gave them free choice of language? Migrants in Montréal go the English CEGEP instead of French CEGEP, if you give migrants the choice, they will most likely opt for English (in Montréal). Free choice of language automatically means the victory of English as French has no chance to compete.

I appreciate you very much and I suppose you live in NB very close to the border to Québec (and the areas around Rimouski are very francophone). I don't know mcuh about oyur circumstances but at least in Romusiki I know that people can life their daily lives completely in French just like Spanish people can in Madrid, etc.  So you don't feel oppressed because you aren't oppressed, hich is logical. What is normal up there in the North and East Québec, is however very different here. The border area between West Montréal and Ontario is becoming increasingly anglophone. Anglo-Amercia does not start at the border to Ontario, it already starts at McGill University. It's easy to say that anyone who is not pleased by this fact can leave Montréal but this only makes Montréaleven more English and let's be honest, there's only one metropolis in Québec. Québec City is not as large, and does not have the metropolitan feeling. If Montréal stops being French, we will have no more "true big city" for us at all, here in North America. Then it won't make a difference whether we go to Boston or Ottawa or Toronto, it iwll be all the same. I think it is in the interest of all Franco-Canadians to make Lady Gaga aware of supporting French while she is in Québec. It is easy to translate and show bilingual messages and slogans.

Okay, you need to chill. It's one concert, and one American artist.

The flag contains the lyrics of CTM. If you're a Lady Gaga fan REGARDLESS OF THE LANGUAGE YOU SPEAK, you would know the song in English. A fan created it. Boohoo it wasn't translated in French. No one will understand what the reference is.

Quebec is in Canada, quit being a whiny baby. You guys use the Canadian flag, like it or not. If you want to live in a French place, move to France, or move outside of Montreal. Go to Quebec City, they speak more French than English there. I'm sick of French people complaining about useless stuff. You have your own laws for immigrations, banking, economy, and languages, you have your own police, and your culture is not weak despite what you believe.

Protest when something will actually hurt your culture like banning French or reducing funding in your French cultural festivals or whatever. Try to enjoy the concert, you killjoy.

/rant

So, our language is useless? Anglo tourists come and they go back, and when they are back, everything they experience is in their culture. For us the same does not apply. And if francophones left Montréal, if would become anglophone overnight.

And our laws on immigration poorly work. Migrants prefer English CEGEP over French CEGEP. (And the only reason why they go to French CEGEP outside Metro Montréal is that there are only few anglo CEGEPS outside, for example the english CEGEP in Québec City is FULL and overloaded). Also it has been shown by some reports that some migrants from Asia only learn French to get permanent stay in Québec and they exploit it to move to Anglo-Canada because it is harder to move to Anglo-Canada than it is to move to Québec. In fact, our migrations laws are not effective at all. Migrants from overseas who come, they study at McGill or Concordia University - French can't compete in science with English - and after that they integrate to anglo communities. No law can stop that. Our laws are not effective. And our culture is only strong outside Montréal, it weak on the South Shore in Vaudreuil and  Châteauguay. It is very fragile in Côte-des-Neiges, Saint-Laurent, West Laval. It is better in Boucherville or Pointe-aus-Trembles.

We are forced to be in Canada, we were denied referendums and Canada spent so much money on keeping us in Canada that it is not even possible to win a referendum when there was one in 1995.

I'm looking gorgeous tonight

Have you ever thought about why this is so? I'll explain it to you: in Québec City, you can live solely in French and it is predominately a francophone city in all areas of public life. This is why people do not feel endangered by anglophone tourists...because theycan life nevertheless in French. And the Anglo Tourists in Québec City do not destroy local culture.

In Montréal it's a whole different city. Partially it is not possible to life anymore solely in French. Switching to English is a part of everyday life, mainly because the other side does not want to speak French or does not nkow it. There are plenty of Anglo-Canadians in the western suburbs who had French at school but does not bother to use it because they can be sure to be always served in English...this is why some people in Montréal are annoyed... they realize how their language is declining..being invaded by English. That's also why they can be harsh to native Anglos like you. You are a tourist. You go back to your country and everything will be in your language. This does not apply to us in Montréal. It is our place, we do not wanna leave. We want it to be in French. And if you do have to use if excessively (English), we become rude towards others.

The Canadian flag represents Anglo-Canadian culture and Anglo-Canadian values, it is inseparably connected to Canadian colonialism under Great Britain.

Honey, while you are writing your sentence, one more street sign is being put up in English-only in Montréal and violating our Charter of the French language. We have our laws but they are not enuogh. We have to extend them to artistis, too. Our laws apply to businesses but not to artists, it's a shame. Of course, artists shouldn't be forced to do their activities in French...that's not my intention. But they should get help from the many translators that are available and spread their slogans at least bilingual, so that it does not comeat the expanse of a community that is about to become a minority.. :)

Honey, we are on a Lady Gaga fansite. Everything Lady Gaga does has a meannig to us. We cannot say: "this is irrelevant". We are here 'cause it is relevant.

You mean the US-American flag, don't you?

Montréal is in Québec and this is the official drapeau du Québec. Lady Gaga can show other flags in other territories. Montréal is the metropolis of Québec. If fans from other provinces come or even from the US, the ymust accept that Montréal is NOT anglophone and this is why it's important that artists show a message that Montréal is not a city where you can come  with the expectation that everything is in English.

“The Duality Flag design was chosen to represent explicitly the Francophone and Anglophone populations on the national flagby adding blue stripes to the red sections, roughly in proportion to the number of Canadians who are primarily French-speaking.”

EDIT: I misread your post. My bad :toofunny:

I found a way to find my inner peace. I just pretend and tell myself that Lady Gaga showed the fleudelisé, the offical Québec flag.

really? :O:( I think it's sad but it does not surprise me, Anglo-American culture is displacing other cultures

I only expect it for concerts in Québec. Outside she can do as she pleases in accordance with the other fans.

I found my inner peace. I just tell myself that Lady Gaga showed this version of the flag. I look at it and pretend that Lady Gaga did not show the terrible Canadian flag. Although, this version is very good because it is bilingual. It supports Québécois culture and although is written in English, too. Everything has to be happy with it!

Hey mister separadee, Montreal is Part of Canada, deal. Stop pushing your agenda against a warming part of a beautiful concert. She’s an English speaking person, so you should except English at that concert.

:madge: People these days, always needing to feel offended in some way.
