Hollywood always goes silence when sexual abuse happened, or any scandal really. This is not the first time. Actually it also happened outside Hollywood as well. There are ring of cults going on as far as Hollywood concerns. Especially if the accused are people with power for fear not being cast anymore on future projects, some also have signed contracts with managements that clearly mention to steer clear from any of these things when it happened or get sued, and many more motives. There are plenty of things going on aside from this I am sure, like pedophile rings, abuse to gay young aspiring actors, and so on. All that glitters is cold. And it isn't right.

This is like Kesha's case and the 2016 election. A lot of people saying "Why isn't Taylor Swift speaking up? Why isn't Gaga doing this? Where is Beyoncé? So Katy Perry is silent, huh?"

Ok, but what about Bruno, Ed Sheeran, Bieber, Timberlake, The Weeknd, etc etc? Are they invisible? Aren't they part of the industry/society?

There is no way to prove that Meryl knew or didn't know about those rumors. You can't give any hard evidence on that. So it's just a matter of trust and faith: do you trust what she is saying? Do you believe it's convincing? 

Furthermore, her ethics in that time could hardly be influenced by any rumours because Hollywood is the place where rumors are numberless and checking them all would take years. It's true that it is the work of investigative journalists and detectives to check the rumors, not the actors. 

Besides, she is not obliged to comment on every bloody issue and scandal that erupts in Hollywood.

even if she did hear a rumor here or there what exactly was she to do with this information? this is a ridiculous thing i've been seeing going around the net. i've heard rumors of someone being creepy before and it's not like i can do anything about it for the precise reason that it is a rumor and not anything definite until someone who has been victimized actually comes forward. uh DUH wtf

Meryl may have heard rumors but I believe her when she says he never tried anything WITH HER, but that doesn't mean she didn't hear whispers at all the galas, award show after parties, off-set chatter, etc

I don't think it's reasonable to assume everyone that knew this man who was apparently very influential in hollywood knew him well enough or in a way that they knew about his private predatory ways. I can imagine people having no idea, and why not Meryl? There's no reason to think she's lying. This letter is just how she feels.

Not so much lying as being...economical with the truth. People are defending her just because of who she is and because she bashed Trump, so she's adored by the left. But regardless of all that, you've got to judge with no bias. Hollywood loves to protect their own, just like most industries. They know that if they talk bad about any of the big names, they might never work again. Yes, the very people who refuse to cast you just might well be some of the very creeps in question but hey, you get a glittering career from it! Meryl is just doing what a lot of others did - waited a couple of days, looked to see what the public's and media's reaction was, waited to see if anyone else was speaking out and came up with a carefully curated PR statement. It's all so transparent. It's all about waiting to see how best to respond. Men have started speaking out but some people are being realists about it. Rose McGowan isn't standing for any nonsense right now on that front. She was the only one that spoke out right from the beginning. She was even branding Ben Affleck a liar when he publicly denounced Harvey earlier today...because she claims that she told him of how Harvey abused her way back in 1998 and yet he's only just know acting like he's shocked and surprised about this. Everyone's scratching each others backs to get ahead and knows when its best to keep quiet. Speaking of Ben Affleck, I didn't know his brother had some similar claims made against him in 2010 and they've come to light now because of this debacle. The cult of Hollywood is under siege, it's crumbling and it might never be the same again.

Some serious tea spilling there. People like you are essential in times like this. It's behind-the-scenes folk who know the real deal, but are obviously bound to be silent.

I'm highly suspicious of all the ones who weren't abused, but were vaguely aware of rumours through the grapevine. I understand why victims don't speak out but the ones who passively let these rumours fly without saying anything? That's a whole different kettle of fish. I notice it's the older actresses who started their career later in life or were already famous before working with him that claim he never tried it on with them. It's clear that he had a habit of picking on new, young actresses trying to make it because they were more naive and prepared to do anything. But that doesn't mean the older ones weren't aware of what was happening. Hollywood is a close knit town where rumours fly within hours. I don't believe that someone as famous and connected as Meryl had absolutely no idea. Someone else even mentioned how she famously gave Roman Polanski a standing ovation once. It's odd how celebrities choose who to support.
