MACATL 1,544 Posted October 10, 2017 Share Posted October 10, 2017 Shania's previous work was written and manufactured to be massive radio anthems, and they absolutely were. The problem for me, even as a HUGE fan, was that you never got the sense she was being completely open and honest with her lyrics. It was just generally very generic, globally relatable and catchy, which is what made it so massively appealing. With this new album, she got REAL. The woman has been THROUGH IT over the last 15 years. These are lyrics from an artist completely bearing her soul for really the first time (she wrote the album 100% alone before ever contacting producers). I went into this album very skeptical that she could create great music without her ex husband/musical collaborator, and I came out very pleasantly surprised with how good it actually is. And it gets better with each listen. If you want an album full of "That Don't Impress Me Much" type songs, this won't be for you. But if you just like well-written, well-produced music and her unique (now deeper and a little more raspy) vocals, check it out for sure.
