Denmark to ban the burqa & niqab

A lot of places have laws against covering ones face for the purpose of "concealment". In the US, a lot of these laws originated to prevent violence from the Ku Klux Klan and have been modified into modern use (since these days racists seem more than happy to not wear a mask...). I know in D.C. the law is against "concealing ones face for the purpose of concealment" meaning, it's not for a festival or Halloween, but to purposefully hide your face (typically meaning there's a reason you don't want to be ID'd). Masks, scarves wrapped up ones face, face paint--all things used to conceal ones face to commit illegal activity like rob people, assault people, etc.

Ok but is this actually a real issue? How many people actually wear this? 

Or are they just politicizing this? 

Cause I've seen very few women wearing a niqab where I live here in the US and they've caused no issue. For laws like this to pass it makes me think THOUSANDS are out in the streets like this and people have an issue with it. 

Never seen a burqa I think, bu it seems like this ban also includes the niqab.

Well if I were a woman who wears a niqab, I'd be too terrified to even think of wearing one in the US. Women wearing hijabs are harassed or even attacked way too often so imagine what would happen with a niqab. Hell I'd be scared to even wear a hijab in the US except if I were in specific areas of specific cities. Right now as a Muslim  (not a woman though but still a Muslim) I don't feel safe visiting the US. I'm not sure about Denmark, but while it isn't THAT common in other places in Europe, it's still common enough to get some people pissed.

I live in a city where I've been exposed to hijabs my entire life. I'm around Muslims all the time. You shouldn't be afraid to visit the US unless you know it's a place prone to attacks tbh. I've seen some niqabs as well at my university and literally no one bats an eye. I'm glad to live in a diverse city.

You're lucky then. My mom grew up in Mass and Florida years ago and I used to visit the US often up until a few years ago so I'm pretty familiar. I didn't stop visiting because of fear but I've been exploring interesting parts of Europe that I haven't visited. Then Trump happened and white supremacists started to become much more prominent and fear started to kick in. There are places like DC or most of New England that are fine compared to other parts of the country, but I know people studying there who've moved to Canada or Europe this year (most of them living in states like Kansas/Ohio/Wisconsin). I might be visiting soon to see my aunt and cousins in DC, but I don't see myself leaving the Northeast or liberal parts of the West. I know that most Americans don't have an anti Muslim mentality (or I hope that most of you guys don't), but it just seems a bit scary with everything going on.

You don’t need to worry unless you are acting the way you did in another thread in real life.

Made myself clear there and on PM. I do feel uneasy in specific places in the US yes I'm not trying to seem naive. Yes I have anger issues and lash out and no that doesn't excuse anything I'm not trying to do that. I'm stating that I feel uneasy in parts of the US and that some people I know have moved as a result. Feel free to point out anything else.

Of course you can feel uneasy and it’s your right to do so. I won’t feel comfortable in some parts of the world, too!

I don’t think I have ever seen a burqa/niqab in the States. There are plenty of hijabs, however. I have no issues with the hijab either.

I traveled to Switzerland in August and was honestly pretty shocked at the amount of burqas/niqabs I saw when there. Because it was something I had never seen before, even living in a diverse city like Chicago, it almost struck a sense of fear into me. I think maybe because I associate fully covered faces like that with criminals in ski masks. I admit it was an irrational fear, but I can understand why many people are uncomfortable around that kind of clothing.
