that's because she connects with literally EVERYONE. Otherwise how do we justify that crazy amount of copies sold?

You are describing Lana's first album phase which was pretty amazing and impactful. But after that, what did she do that was revolutionary for her career? I feel like her themes, lyrics and sounds became pretty much boring because it's always the same. And lets be honest, her youtube numbers are not that huge.

Gaga bursted onto that scene in a totally different way! Gaga came as a full package and presented herself in a way no other female did before. She was and still is a bomb.

Sorry not sorry. :laughga:

For her career? Well, I think her career runs in the same pattern/scheme as Gaga's. Ultraviolence was as much a departure from Lana's previous sound/themes on Born To Die (Paradise) as was Born This Way a departure from The Fame (Monster) for Gaga.

I do enjoy the myth that Lana's themes and lyrics are always the same, but like, where on Born To Die does she sing about obsessive relationship? On Born To Die, she's a happy girl who's in love with complicated men, but she's in love, she's hopeful (even at Dark Paradise) and it's more like her and her lovers against the world. On Ultraviolence it's her against her lovers, and the dark side of relationship and narcoleptic stuff. Gaga's themes, lyrics and sounds are pretty much boring in the same way all Woody Allen films are the same, all Alfred Hitchcock films are the same, all Tony Bennett songs are the same, etc. She is above all dedicated to her style, which makes her sort of uneventful in the age when we aim to celebrate diversity, but she's far from artistically boring.

There's nobody we can compare with Gaga since Gaga, I am not trying to say that Lana's on the same level. Gaga is incomparable. Gaga came fresh, she didn't have a Disney/Nickelodeon past, didn't perform in a pop group prior to solo career. She scored two number one songs from debut album, sold 6,5 million copies in the US with The Fame (Monster) and embarked on her debut arena tour that grossed over $200,000,000, winning five Grammy awards before the tour was over. The pop music hasn't known any debut like that since 2009. Some people even say that a debut like that isn't possible in the era of streaming.

I'm trying to say that Lana's debut and her image were breathtaking in different terms, she was a figure of the streaming era. And she truly appeared after Gaga, and she is fresh and doesn't have TV past. Adele's 19 was released long before Gaga, Miley was there long before Gaga, Bieber appeared simultaneously or slightly earlier than Gaga. I don't have anything against Ariana Grande, but she was not that fresh riding her wave of TV popularity. The Weeknd rose to prominence with his third studio album, fourth if we consider Trilogy his debut. Sia has been there for ages.

Kendrick is fresh and cool, but  as @Ziggy has mentioned, he lacks some cross-over appeal in order to be considered impactful, although he has raised the bar for hip-hop and rap. I have never heard of Dua Lipa anywhere except for this forum.

Lana has become an internet household name. It's just that a lot of her fans are pissed that she doesn't make infectious glittery hip-hoppish bops anymore and are tired of her electro-blues. She has a legacy to fall upon and even though her most ionic days are probably behind us, her impact is real.

Edit: OMG not at me paying dust to Lorde :air:

Gosh, people in here writing Nicki Minaj :madge:

What was the impact she made? Her ass shaking in a music video of a nonsense song? Did that change the music industry in a huge and positive way?

she revived female rap, lol

y'all use the term 'iconic' loosely lmao.

Although I'd have to say my top picks are: Lana, Solange, FKA Twigs (established names)

potential talents I'd looks out for: Kali Uchis, Kelela (check them out if you haven't already) ;)

Ï could be your girlfriend for the weekend...
