But with rises of nationalistic movements, support for pro-nationalistic presidents (Trump, Duterte etc.), and growth of extremism it IS surprising. What's truly sad is that people still believe that "this stuff has been happening since forever" is a good excuse to simply dismiss these events and to imply that they're normal. Also, people like Gaga do exist in the Middle East. Hamed Sinno is an openly gay Lebanese and lead singer of Mashrou Leila and activist and is one example of many in a world where free speech is extremely limited. Progressiveness has always been in the ME. But a lot of that depended on the examples Western (and some Eastern) countries set for the world with justice and liberty (look at the Arab Spring ffs). But with the rise of nationalism and resurgence of conservatism in recent years is making liberalism less appealing in still-progressing countries.
