Was it an issue at all during the campaign? 1) With the fall of ISIS in Syria and the support of Russian air forces against the opposition troops, President Bashar al-Assad looks like he is about to consolidate his control over the country. Will German government welcome the restoration of al-Assad, if it happens? 2) Russia is still supporting two breakaway regions of Eastern Ukraine, contributing to the economic turmoil in the country. This week, Ukraine is back at the debt markets, issuing $3bn in dollar-denominated bonds for the first time since 2013. A lot of IMF experts have expressed concerns about this step. Russia-supported separatists are controlling the gas and coal rich regions of Ukraine, thus causing much harm to Ukrainian economy that is trying to undergo painful reforms. Will Merkel try to rethink the policy of sanctions for a more bitter approach? 3) Turkey under Erdogan is going through some major changes which are not welcomed by many German politicians. A lot of people blame Erdogan for dictatorship and constant violation of human rights. Will the clouds of sanctions gather over Germany-Turkey economic ties, too? How do you think?
