SEANGT 5,425
I find it really interesting how this film was laid out. The album release and reception was far from the center of Gaga's world as it was portrayed here. Beyond following her around and showing the scene at Walmart, we got more of the behind-the-scenes emotional moments than a focus on this one project that other artist films may be about. One part in particular sticks out - there's a montage basically showing how the album was received and the audio clips go from positive to "we want the old gaga back." But then the film goes on and she's still just struggling with the same things, working hard and trying to maintain a healthy relationship with her family and friends. The few moments where Gaga gets excited about MR and Joanne being #1 around the time of the superbowl I've seen as being touted as proof that Gaga really cares about chart success. I think that idea implies that chart success factors into her creative process or that she thinks about it all the time. I feel like the film shows the opposite. The fact that she had to be told and she didn't even know beforehand tells us she isn't seeking this chart info out. She takes it as a sign that her hard work is paying off and moves on. I don't think she ever really thinks about needing to be successful commercially. Even when she was thinking about if her "old fans" are going to be disappointed, I believe that was only because, as is almost cliche to say by now, she really cares about her fans and pleasing them. I don't think she's even really looking to make more fans. She's just trying to be a healthy human being and express herself through art and music. She takes her current platform and uses it to the best of her ability but she's not going to do anything but be her most authentic self to expand that platform. If you look at the documentary as a whole I think it really proves that point.

ryanripley 86,575
absolutely, she's being an artist and she loves it! as she said in the doc, if you don't like it then oh well she's obviously going to want her work to be successful, who doesn't? but i don't think she's ever going to craft her music purely for success which is why i stan this lady https://goo.gl/xMgMvJ
Ziggy 12,076
I mean, with all her other stressors in her life, it's obvious that chart success is pretty much a blip at this point in her life, but nice to have when it happens
fede ARTPOP 6,737
She dont make music for the charts, she just make the music she loves, then she get happy if it goes to #1 and how she performs on charts, is different. Dominic 11,922
I actually think the opposite. I think it means that "music not the bling" shouldn't be taken so literal. She is clearly wanting the chart success and clearly cares about it. Actions outside of the doc show that; single switches, BUY APPLAUSE etc and there are moments in the doc that show she cares; putting her CD upfront so people buy it, caring about if she is #1, people downloading it illegally etc. Sure she doesn't write for chart success but she aspires for it in how she manages the product. This isn't a negative. It shows she cares enough about her work to make it a success and wants that success. She has a good balance between music and bling. I hope this stops fans from spouting 'music not the bling' in every chart thread now. Both can be wanted and both can be attained, there is nothing less artistic about that. Gaga is proof. The hardest thing in this world is to live in it

kizurl 1,801
There is a fine line between making music for chart success and wanting to see something personal to you duly received by the public. She's already have all the riches in the world, if you for a second think she just wants to earn as much money or further inflate her ego by charting high then you clearly do not know a thing about her. Gaga is proof. right I think we're saying kind of the same thing. I just like to be clear that Gaga is an artist first and creates mostly free from the influence of commercialism. But she will WERQ to promote and release her music as best she can. Marketing and creating are two sides of Gaga that I think are more separate than with other artists.
