I feel like the US should adopt this way of thinking. Such a huge chunk of eligible voters didn't cast their vote last election cycle and that really worries me.

The Electoral College has failed 5 times, and has about a 7% failure rate. While that doesn't sound bad, it's a pretty big margin of error considering that this is the system that elects the Commander in Chief of one of the most powerful nations in the world.

It's not like people didn't show up to vote. Granted, a lot more people could have, but again, she won by 3 million votes. It's not a couple hundred, not a couple thousand, not a couple hundred thousand, but 3 million. That's huge!

It can go seriously wrong too... but American is alot more passionate politically- Alot of Australians are swing voters.

I'm a math major not a poli-sci major, so I literally know very little about the workings of politics, so I may be severely wrong here, but wouldn't a populous voting system be more in tune with the country than an the EC system that the US has right now?

Yeah it would. We don't even have an EC system because its mandatory for all to vote. BUT when one major party stuffs up or is in for too long the other one comes in and ruins it (like what is happening rn)

I completely agree with her. The EC is ridiculous. One person, one vote. That's how it should be. Everyone in that system is represented equally. In our current system the minority is over represented.

Here in Canada we do not have independants or larger party majorities with a Prime Minister of another party

 

The Prime Minister is simply the leader of the winning party which goes by seats making a 100% popular vote impossible in our case

 

But in the US for the President a popular vote system could work

The results would've only differed 5 times in history. 3 times in the 1800s, once in 2000 (the reason Bush won), and 2016. I don't know much about the 1800s, but both 2000 and 2016 gave us disastrous presidents.
