StrawberryBlond 14,862
I don't think it would be profitable to keep this dead horse going. If the all-American, meme-tastic, focus-group-researched Swish Swish video couldn't make the song a hit in the US, (Katy's biggest market) then it would be wise to just call it a day. Seriously, there's no reason why this song would fail to hit top 40 in the US - it's a diss track aimed at Taylor for maximum controversy, it features Nicki, it has a house beat that cool right now. But it can't even go top 40? This is bad, real bad. Gaga stopped the AP era after 3 singles. When there is an overpowering whiff of dead meat, record labels always pull the plug, to protect their investments. If Katy wants to make decent money from this tour (which is struggling to sell tickets despite reduced prices and 2 for 1 offers), then she needs to just cut her losses and move on. At most, she should promote the 3 singles she's already released but trying to make new ones happen? Not worth it. Even if she did try, literally none of the other songs scream "hit." Deja Vu has huge views for some reason and there were rumours it was going to be the next single but if even the fans aren't supporting the songs like they're supporting the YouTube videos, then I don't think their taste truly matters. You're quoting the Heatseekers chart there. That's the NZ equivalent of the US Billboard Bubbling Under chart. It's an easy mistake to make, but a big one. This was obviously the reason why she waited so long to announce NZ tour dates and waited until the SS video to release them. Because her new music has flopped there. CTTR was the only song that charted - BA and SS haven't even hit their top 100. And considering how tiny NZ's music market is, it's super easy to get a hit there if you're a big name like Katy, so if she hasn't even hit their top 100, can you imagine how little she's selling? That's why I'm surprised she's decided to tour there, even if it is almost a year away. She did 2 dates there with the Prismatic tour, when she was at her peak selling power, so how does she think she can do 2 dates there again when she's flopping? hoeslay 4,182
I just need Power to be single. We all do. Also Tsunami would've been a perfect single to promote with Feels but now it's about to be autumn so...

I suppose so, but the two factors are at play - Katy Perry is seen as unpopular, past her prime and cringeworthy...and the song just isn't that good. Especially by virtue of it being a Katy song. It might formulaically be a contender for a massive hit, but other, glaring factors are in the way. I think ultimately it's about Katy and her recent inability to make a great song (except for CTTR, which was one of my favorites of the year) that are holding her music down success wise. Yes, I understand that and am behind that theory but the point is that the music buying public doesn't really care about supporting truly great songs. They always want generic tunes with the right names on them. Nicki has made some truly awful songs go top 10 just by virtue of being on them (that terrible Yo Gotti song, Rake It Up debuted in the BB top 10 because she was on it even though the song's views and likes are abysmal). That's the power of having a big name on your track - you can have success with mediocre/bad songs. I mean, I knew she was going to flop with this era but even I underestimated the sheer magnitude of it. I don't know why people thought the stuff from Witness was so much worse than Prism (they're about equal, in my opinion), but the public's swing of opinion is a peculiar thing. It just seems to suddenly either take hold or drop for no real reason. I would say never changing and sticking to a formula would cause people to get bored and move on, but then there are other artists who remake the same album over and over again and always have big success, so I don't know.
