If people want gender to be a spectrum, it shouldn't be genderless or with 36 genders. If you're trying to escape the label "boy" or "girl" then quit making up more labels. Bye 3,947
The dilemma is that transitioning earlier helps prevent puberty and secondary sexual characteristics from developing. I hope he'll be able to de-transition just fine.

Guest
Kids should not be allowed to transition. I'm saying that as a transgender woman myself. Wait til you're 16-18 to alter your body in such a major way.

Technically he's transitioning in the other direction, though it would be a little confusing given the nature of the word as being a before -> after narrative, yet he's looping back. hmmm. Whispering 18,865
Thankfully, he is in the position to change his mind. I applaud the parents who listen to and support their children at a young age. I'm sure there are medical professionals available to help guide those parents who are open and ready to take this journey with their child.

Bjaf 1,336
I truly don't think there should be an age restriction on transitioning, at all. The ideal solution would probably be to live in a society free of all gender constructs so that young children can live without fear of judgement and position themselves within the gender spectrum - but that is not the case and, for now, simply non-realistic. In the meantime, I think it's essential that we try and raise our children in a gender-neutral environment, and if they wish to transition, so be it. Why? Well: https://williamsinstitute.law.ucla.edu/wp-content/uploads/AFSP-Williams-Suicide-Report-Final.pdf Suicide rates among young trans people is so ****ing high. And there are countless of proofs showing that transitioning can help greatly in improving the person's condition as a whole. So why not give them this opportunity? I've heard from many people how they only wish they were given that chance, and that it would have drastically improved their childhood as a whole and avoid for them to be misgendered for most of their lives until now. You should know that people love their token minorities and would love to quote you as authoritative proof that minors shouldn't transition. It was a matter of clarification. I knew I was a girl and liked guys way before I ever knew gay or trans people existed. I was sheltered from this information as a child and knew no real culture except for video games and ****. I'm certainly not the only one. They're not intrinsically connected. Perhaps as time goes on this may be more of an issue, but I think there's a vast difference between raising a child to be genderless, coercing them to be trans, eliminating gender roles, and not punishing children for not following those gender roles. Massive difference between each of them. I was raised in a way that quelled any abnormality to suit my family's wishes. We went through hell and back and so my dad wanted no further aggravation, meaning my gender was never allowed to be a discussion. I would've been hurt back then for seriously mentioning it. I've always thought it would be best to transition at a younger age (before puberty) because in doing so you can slow or stop the process and avoid mental disturbances due to believing your gender doesn't match your sex organs (sorry if that's worded poorly) and it would make transitioning easier in the long run. I understand that at certain ages, children aren't well informed on ramifications and details, but do they not know how they feel in regards to how they identify and what they have? Because I agree that young children (<10ish) should not transition, but I would think that children who are about to hit puberty would know or at least have a good indication that they are transgendered. I am not transgendered and have never dealt with someone who is first hand, so if I sound ignorant I apologize, but if you could educate me on this I would really appreciate it

At 12 years old I would have agreed to a year of extensive therapy, maybe even two, if I had known I could transition. That being said, MOST people aren't ready to make this kind of decision. But there ARE people who are, and they can NOT be pushed aside. I was sort of on the fence because it is a touchy subject because, just like I know I'm gay, I interpret transgender people to know this since a very young age and be certain about it and I encourage early transitions because puberty makes a huge difference in your body and appearance, but then again, I remember myself at 10/12 and I was f*cking dumb. I think you have brought a nice point though, 1-2 years of therapy is not too crazy considering it is a pretty big decision. It's all about going through a legislation that actually studies and cares for the matter objectively.
