StrawberryBlond 14,864 Posted September 3, 2017 Share Posted September 3, 2017 So, she did indeed go down this rapping/urban route that she was rumoured to be trying out when rumours circulated that she was seeing Drake (though, looking back on it, that seemed totally media spun). I thought it must have been too non-Taylor to be true, but apparently not. I like the heaviness of it mixed with the light, tropical sounding beat and while the rap's fun in a guilty pleasure way, it's hard to take it completely seriously because her voice doesn't lend itself to rapping at all. She just sounds like a teen valley girl trying to be edgy by being all "hood." If she'd maybe altered her voice a bit, it would've helped. I still like the track overall, but the rap bits could've sounded better. I can't believe that I'm liking this new Taylor album so far. This is so out of character. But the rap fans could potentially slam her for this. Those verses have the potential to be massacred by critics and especially by Kanye fans. I just think rap's a genre she can't play in, it's just too much of a risk, for multiple reasons. It's going to make whole fanbases laugh at her and put off the soccer moms even more than they might already be after LWYMMD. But I can't fault her for taking a risk in this case. So awful. im just trying to picture her spit out those lyrics live trying to look tough and in reality she looks like a clown. I feel like with Taylor, her success has given her a lot of false hope to try things she can't do.
