CautiousLurker 19,473
Lets see - a highly critically acclaimed musician who makes a very comfortable living off of her work - wish I could flop like that... It doesn't even matter if you like her sound or not - a deaf person will know what she's turning out is pretty high quality stuff, calling that a flop... not everything in life comes down to how much money you make @Majora only cares about the money tho It's a joke! When you give me that look, it's a joke!
AlexanderMagno 10,746
You know, now that I think about this, Lorde is the perfect example of an artist that delivers music and discussing if her album is a flop or not is totally irrelevant I'm very much in love with the album, and it truly is one of the best this year. It could sell a hundred copies all over the world, I wouldn't be slightly mad about it because I'm enjoying listening to it so much. If you listen to an album, say you love it but still feel the need to argue about whether it's a flop or not, something is wrong (and yes, that is shade to Gaga stans that praise everything that Gaga does but are unable to peacefully enjoy what she delivers because they are always arguing about her not being a flop. If they truly loved her music, they wouldn't even now there's a thing called billboard or hdd. And I do remember that, during TFM and BTW eras, I truly didn't know what HDD was and I wasn't aware that Billboard charts were such a big deal)
Miel 15,009
It's fantastic music, that just didn't hit the market mark like her previous work. Which is fine, especially if she wasn't intending it to. I just would have been cool of it did. 3 points in and ready for more

Royals was the only hit she'd had in the grand scheme of things. So, a lesser selling album is completely expected especially considering she took nearly 4 years to follow up her debut. Plus, music sales are in the pits right now, so yeah. She was never going to be a massive star having hit after hit and selling out stadiums. That's not what she wants. I don't think the album is necessarily a flop because it's selling as well as you could hope for considering the type of album it is. I mean, I consider Lana to be going through some level of a comeback right now even though she still can't get hits merely because she's selling more than her last album, her new work is getting more views and likes than normal and she's about to start a proper world tour which is only her second ever tour despite 4 albums. So, Lorde's the kind of artist I put into that category. She's doing great for an artist of her kind, that's all. Well, apart from Justin (don't know why you included him, as he's huge right now), those acts don't really prove your point because Chainsmokers have sold more copies of their new album than Lorde has, have had bigger hits with it and are currently doing an arena tour with it and FH's sales certainly are laughable and much worse than Lorde's right now and no one was debating that. I lumped all those artists together because I view a "flop" era based on actual quality and the sales, though I do recognize most people consider a flop just bad sales regardless of how good an album actually is. I'm no expert on sales, though . That being said, I mentioned those 3 because regardless of their success, I believe all of their music is quite bad and subpar (especially compared to Lorde, who has my AOTY). Completely my opinion though. I see what your saying.
NIghtmareElm 2,606
Chart wise? Yeah the singles are flopping. However it's one of the most critically acclaimed albums of the year. The album is on it's way to become an iconic classic. She is doing an arena tour in the states.

SEANGT 5,311
if that's your standard then Lorde is a one-hit wonder
Harry 26,836
To me, the word "flop" is relative to the artist... If someone like Taylor Swift or Justin Bieber pulled these stats for an album era, then I'd consider it a flop. But with Lorde - not so much. I don't really think that anyone expected Lorde to come out with an album full of radio-ready smashes, and she didn't. The fact that Pure Heroine/Royals were so successful is still impressive considering it sounded like nothing at the time... She wasn't going to replicate that. She still feels very relevant thanks to her huge acclaim and strong fanbase, and she's going to play arenas for the first time.

Monsterish 5,520
Wtf, she had only 2 fcking Eras Best Album Of 2017 so far, that's all I've got to say
VforVendetta 2,024
She never was a mainstream artist, she just happened to have success with her previous era so no tbh, she is doing fine. I don't consider critical aclaim to play a role in an album's success. Critics can **** off.
