Guardian: As Gaga once was, Taylor is now viewed as a snake

Btw, the irony in that this website is the only time I see a collective of people repeatedly call Taylor a snake, and then turn around and claim systematic misogyny :selena:

It's a joke! When you give me that look, it's a joke!

The article was more about the unequal standards placed on women vs men. That played out in the election and plays out in the professional and entertainment world.

Are you kidding?

Rihanna makes fun of a female teenage fan for being ugly, she still pulls MASSIVE hits.

Nicki Minaj makes fun of disabled people and she's the go-to feature to get a song in the top 10.

What. Are. Y'all. Smoking......

Just because one white woman faces backlash bc of LEGITIMATELY bad behavior, all of a sudden people are tossing it up to sexism?

B, where?!

-Says Taylor is "universally despised" despite her being one of the most successful pop stars, having numerous hit singles, albums and tours and being mostly popular with the GP.

I'm sorry, but any sympathy I might have had for the author's argument was lost in their hyperbole.

That's right. :golfclap:

If we're going to talk about someone "universally despised", let's talk about Iggy. She was literally mocked and heavily criticized by the media, to the point where her career as a rapper is almost destroyed.

Even her label turned their back on her. She's a real victim and a sweet person, and you don't see her making a whole drama like Taylor Swift.

The article makes some good points, but I don't think Taylor is solely a victim. As a woman she is due to the misogyny in our culture and the criticism of her is shaped by that, but some of the criticism is legitimate and not just sexism.

If any of you are trying to say sexism and misogyny don't exist or aren't at work and want to point to how men are treated in the same way, then you're wrong. Women in media and in Hollywood have a double standard they are upheld to and which men aren't.

Maybe recently lol how about every black male musician ever getting seconds when it came to the music industry. They had to start a whole freaking genre (Motown) to get theirs and it STILL got taken from them and the king to rise out of it (MJ) was struck down and vilified. Let's not even get into how Elvis up and stole rock and roll and work from black musicians...

my point is that while misogyny is certainly alive and vibrant, men have also had their share, just maybe not as many white men. I can count a total of 0 Asian famous musicians in the west, for example (except Yo Yo Ma). So I see it as more complex than men vs. women. This is an issue that is intersectional and requires a lot of care to discuss effectively.

Of course the situation can be intersectional but why can't we have a discussion about women without it being hijacked for a different cause? If someone ran into a political discussion on race saying "ok but what about the gays and womz???" their head would be on a platter

You're characterization of the issue is simple and pretty basic. As seems to be your understanding of the ways in which gender works in our society. So really you did miss the point.

That's not to say that any criticism against Taylor or other women is sexism though. There are valid points and criticisms.

You should also realize that there are a set of gender dynamics at play here though that shape how the media talk about women, and in this case, Taylor.

Wasn't the person grabbing her at a convert and refusing to let go?

Number one, I'm not your bitch.

Secondly, Nicki and Rihanna do seem to get away with things that others wouldn't. Is it because it is part of their bad girl image or the general genre of music they put out? If Gaga, Taylor, Katy did the same, it would be a different story. Even then, women have faced hurdles in hip hop for years, so Nicki has battled that. Nicki and Mariah were used for their catfight on American Idol more than their expertise in their fields.

I expect nothing less from someone who thinks only women face double standards :selena:
