Her having little involvement means we get to see Gaga through somebodies eyes that arent her own, and that makes me even more excited honestly

I feel the same way but I'm also sad that is seems like Gaga isn't too involved with it.

She didn't wanted to be objective about it

Thank you for clarifying!

She also said she decided when they could film her and what they could film. She's also said she's seen little parts of it.

Maybe it's me but I'm not worried. She knows when they were filming and how raw/uncomfortable/emotional parts of it are and has no desire to watch it back edited together.

As others have said, if she got her hands on it, like any of us, it would prob be much more edited.

She knows she can't be objective and has said they are her friends and want people to see what they see.

She is way more warrior than victim and this will prob show the reality of how hard that really is.

Im all for her not being in charge of it.

It's so opposite to what she's used to, but it makes sense. Anyone in the public eye wants to maintain a particular image and will do anything to maintain that image. Gaga would be inherently bias if she was directing etc the entire thing. Of course, she will still be subjective in choosing what they film etc, but it's quite scary to leave hours and hours of footage in someone else's hands, who will edit/chop it to create their vision of her.

No offence but this high key sounds like something you’d say when you couldn’t give a flying **** about a project and you've been forced to release it for a few $$$ and to promote Netflix

it kinda kills the hype for me a bit, I guess? Idk :neyde: part of enjoying a Gaga project is seeing her talk so excitedly about it and hyping it to us all but with this she’s just like “oh it’s a documentary my friends made so y’all can see the real me. Idk what you should expect tho”

am I being extra :selena:

Didn't she say she just didn't want to watch it because it was so deep and brought back bad memories?

I mean, this is something we knew. It's also not that surprising. I mean, she can't hype tf out of something she doesn't really know about so her sort of blase approach to this is not so surprising.

I prefer it this way. Its nice that she puts her imput, but her team became a bunch of "yes men", and honestly, an actual director who studied film will do a better edit that gaga throwing out stuff at the wall and see if it works. also, she tends to over produce stuff, so for once will get a nice clean unbiased edit!

I think you are tbh :laughga:

Her lack of involvement is what excited me. I've studied doco, i'm currently editing a short doco right now that I directed and shot.

The less involved a subject is in a doco the better - there are exceptions, but we all have egos and we all want to be seen a certain way. A doco about me wouldn't be honest if I was editing it together and choosing scenes, not because I wouldn't want it to be, but I'm invested in how I want the narrative to be. You want your subject to forget the camera is even there, you want them to act true to themselves, you want them to let their guard down. The director should be the one that pieces together a picture and a story, not the subject.

A mentor of mine directed a pretty well known doco that was critically praised and won some big awards, including a BAFTA. She shot her subject for a little over a year and used basically nothing of the first couple months because after a while he forgot he was being filmed, he let his guard down and she managed to capture something deeply honest and personal. That's what you want - not some sanitized Beyonce doco (no hate to Beyonce, love her, but her doco wasn't super personal or revealing. She chose how much to let us in).

I don't see how this is a bad thing. The documentary will be more objective and less self-indulgent, which makes it more interesting. And when you think about it, it's very brave of Gaga to risk letting people see her in a light that might not be very flattering. I'm not saying the doc will slanderous but it will definitely feel more real.
