Villanelle 1,247
Ms Mariah Carey. She was given the "diva" title very early in her career, and eventually (from around the Emancipation era onwards I'd say) embodied it as a proper persona. Her vocal range is extraordinary, her voice is unlike no other, her SHADE is flawless and utterly hilarious...yet people would rather share videos of her new years eve performance or of a live bum note. It will only be in decades to come, when Ms Mariah is no longer with us, that we will truly realize what a unique vocal talent this skinny legend has. Also I can see how some people might not be ok with her exploiting her children and famous husband for sales and those writing credits. So I get the hate, but shes still a good performer tho... she doesnt deserve that much hate I only see it on this site. I’m a simple guy to please, if you like Melodrama, we chill. She is called the Queen and praised when she finally sings live, yet if any of her contemporaries did that, they would be dragged to hell. I think the media's treatment of her changed because of how badly it messed up her mental health before. One thing for sure is that the only contemporary artists that are on Britney's level of scrutiny are Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston. You look at this review of Toxic: Listening to it now, knowing the bizarre behavior and unimaginable public scrutiny that was about to befall her, it's hard not to want to warn her — although if she hadn't fallen off, we wouldn't have had her defiant 2007 comeback single, "Piece of Me" Which just happens to be Spears' second-best song. http://www.npr.org/2009/11/13/120385043/the-decade-in-music-britney-spears-toxic-2004 It's obviously ridiculous to suggest Beyonce, Gaga, Taylor Swift or Katy Perry have ever faced 'unimaginable public scrutiny'

I'm not saying they were hounded by the paparazzi as badly as she once was. Lextyr97 19,909
Gaga of course, DEFINITELY U2, and omg Coldplay. I'll never understand the hate for the 3. All three are extremely talented, successful, and always aim for smiles

Britney Spears sings live once and there are articles praising her and calling her "The Queen" Da fuq Well with Britney Spears, it's not just about music: With the possible exceptions of Michael Jackson and O.J. Simpson (who have both been legally accused of doing things far worse than binge-drinking or smoking cigarettes around children), no current male celebrity has had to endure anywhere near the level of press and public nastiness that Britney’s had to put up with this past year-plus. When Owen Wilson attempted suicide earlier this year, reportedly under the influence of drugs, legions of concerned well-wishers sprung up across the media and Internet. Most shied away from the uglier details of the incident, allowing Wilson time to “heal” in relative privacy. Can you even imagine Britney receiving such polite, courteous treatment? http://www.popmatters.com/feature/in-defense-of-britney/ Yes. The name Britney Spears was just as caustic as O.J. Simpson a decade plus ago. Nothing revisionist about it like fans like to do nowadays since this article was actually published during height of that period. Beyonce Knowles, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber are not anywhere near that level; never have and never will. But back to the actual music: While some people praise her vocals, many others criticize it to and have always criticized her lip-synchs. But it should be pointed out that Britney's songs and Gaga's songs do not have similar vocal ability. (And like it or not, Michael Jackson, Madonna and Janet Jackson paved the way for Britney to lip-synch) It should also be pointed out that Jlo lip-synchs as much as Britney (but to pre-recorded tracks, which is better to some) and hardly anybody complains. I don't necessarily think that the general public sits down and compares vocal ranges needed for various songs. I could be wrong, but I just don't see it. The other artists I listed, I specifically said that they were never at a point of being hounded in the media like Britney was (Justin Bieber might have come somewhat close). The only other celebrities I could even think of who were at that level would be maybe Amanda Bynes. I personally see it as a collective unsaid respect that people give to Britney now, simply because of how far they pushed her over the edge. It's like this hidden secret that the media now praises her for things they would massacre anyone else for. My support for that? Read any of the articles posted about Britney when she sang live like two weeks ago. The articles praise her, and the comments say otherwise. Tbh the comments weren't even really mean, as you would typically find in a comment section. It was just flat out facts: "only in 2017 are we praising someone for singing a single song live when that is what is already expected from a singer". Britney Spears has even been photographed walking into convenience stores these days with a pap catching her by chance, and typically from across the street. She seems to have this unspoken "GET OUT OF JAIL FREE CARD" and while I don't condone paparazzi harassing people, it's bullshit that others can't be given the same respect she is given now. SiliconeMonster 1,617
Totally agree on Nickelback. I take a lot of sh*t for being a fan of theirs (similarly to how I have for being a LM). I'm actually going to see them in concert in about a week and a half and I'm super excited about it. It pisses me off when really great artists get blacklisted by the GP for really no genuine reason other than something petty. If you think about it... A five octave vocal range, the most-successful female recording artist, has 18 #1's, and her record for most weeks at #1 with 16 weeks. What Mariah has accomplished, most singers can only dream. Adoremus in caelum, Palutena. Dea luminis.

Bieber and Bynes have been hounded but they simply didn't have the same media scrutiny. There's a big difference there. Britney was compared to OJ Simpson. You're acting like this was just a paparazzi thing. Even in 2003, way before 2006-2008, it was "intense public scrutiny" (4:35, 5:36) People definitely thought she would be dead in 2007, 2008. She should be a better performer today. No question.about it. I totally dislike her arrogance today. But those 'others' you talked about simply didn't have the career she had. And, like it or not, Michael Jackson, Madonna and Janet Jackson still paved the way for Britney to be lip-synching.

Britney is lypsincing since 1998 and is no secret, everyone knows that, so if the media criticised her it would be no news. I would like her to sing more often, though. I also feel like Britney is the only artist to get away with lypsincing and still have career 20 years later. Everyone on her place would have been burried and forgotten by know if the lypsinced that much. I guess lypsincing is her trademark, no one minds it when is Britney.
