There's only one artist being called The Queen right now and that's Beyonce. She was also the current reigning queen of the music scene until Taylor just came back. Since Taylor's extended absence, Beyonce has had the best-selling female album of 2016, got outstanding critical reception, has done praised live performances, has won a ton of awards, has had a sold-out stadium tour and was hotly tipped to win the Grammy for AOTY (and probably was the runner-up). Taylor, considering that not too long ago, she had all this, might be feeling a bit resentful and fear that her image as the #1 American female and the #1 female overall is under threat. So, throw in this bit about "kingdom keys" and then a sequence that brings to mind Beyonce's Mrs Carter tour promo video and the Formation video (plus Beyonce performances in general) and we're starting to get an even clearer picture. Taylor's notorious for not showing mega support for fellow female artists if they're at her level of success or greater. She hates Katy, she was just friendly to Gaga whenever they met at award shows but she never became a member of her squad, she's never hung around Rihanna or Nicki. She was never seen around Miley post-Bangerz. I don't think I've ever seen her around Adele. And she's never hung around Beyonce much either (except for big events). Notice how she doesn't feature females on her songs either? The few singers in her squad and the ones she invited onstage were all artists who had very limited success, were one hit wonders or were trying to catch a break at the time (Ellie Goulding, Selena Gomez, Lorde, Meghan Trainor, Fifth Harmony, Rachel Platten, Charli XCX, etc). Basically, no one that posed a huge threat to her. I don't think she has any real reason to hate Beyonce, of course, but maybe there's something that went on behind that scenes that we don't know about? Let's not pretend that Taylor doesn't want to get that queen bee image that Beyonce has. She's no longer hiding the fact that she likes and craves success now. It's possible to have a well-researched opinion without being over-dramatic or pathetic. I'm sick of people saying something like "you're reading too much into it" or "you need to get a life" every time someone presents a theory that isn't in line with theirs. It's usually because they're too lazy to come up with ones of their own and are resentful of those who put in the time and effort to formulate their own views. If you don't like what I have to say, fine, but at least show a bit of basic respect.

I've never seen a reach quite like this. To think that that one line has anything to do with Beyoncé is quite absurd. Taylor has better sales than Beyoncé so there is no way she has ever felt resentful of Bey's own personal success.

Pardon me for offering up a suggestion. Yes, Taylor's sales may have overall been better but Beyonce's got the same level of critical praise, awards, touring success, all the other things. Plus, she's doing the whole visual album thing which Taylor has never done, so it gives her an extra edge. I already said that Beyonce took over as the #1 woman while Taylor was gone. Taylor may feel like she's got to up her game when she comes back if she wants to topple her from her throne. Don't think for a minute that Taylor isn't aware of other females success, business plans, fanbases, etc. and wants to emulate them.

I personally think the line is meant to be general, not necessarily a direct reference to a particular person. She's merely jealous of whoever is at the top at any given moment that she isn't. Sometimes I write lyrics that can be about multiple people in my life, Plus, the line after heavily implies that the person who stole their kingdom keys was positively affiliated with her and she let her guard down near them. But part of me thinks that this has to do with her thinking to trust Kanye despite the 2009 VMA's incident and then having him betray her, all while having massive success with his new album at the time. In the midst of the feud, he came out on top in the public eye, so he "stole her kingdom keys". The "You asked me for a place to sleep, Locked me out and threw a feast" heavily implies betrayal. Basically, Kanye lured Taylor into trusting him by letting her know about the lyric in advance, and then betrayed her by having Kim record the conversation for inconsistencies and then use it to spoil her media reputation. He came out on top between the two of them, and that might be what she's talking about, not necessarily the pop queen crown.

Yes, I realise that it could be a resentment towards anyone who's currently at the top but as that's currently Beyonce, well...I've said before that every line is 50/50, that half refers to one person and the other half is someone else. I think this line could potentially be that. I know what the line means, just that who it refers to could be interchangeable. Yeah, referring to Kanye is all well and good but she already laid into him and Kim in the first verse. I wondered if it could be about Calvin? How she literally gave him a place to sleep as they were sleeping together, then as soon as they broke up, he s**t-talked her on Twitter and teamed up with Katy on a song. I don't know how he could come out of this unscathed, the other half of the line could be about him. I even considered that it could be about a member of her squad who used Taylor's fame to bolster their own and was a fake friend. Taylor was always inventing those girls to sleep over, so maybe the "I gave you a place to sleep" line is literal in this case? I just don't know if all the lines are about one person through and through, that's all I'm saying.

IHE 563
It didn't give me heart stirrings the way Gaga videos once did, but it was really funny and clever at the end. Anyone being pressed about Taylor needs to step back and realize they like each other even if you don't care for Taylor, like me. Also, Gaga is now a solidified iconic touring force that no longer needs to break records or be "this year's best" in order to sell out tours. You do get that our girl has joined the ranks of the greats and her career has survived and is beyond all of that now? Taylor doing well or Katy doing bad doesn't change that. Gaga is beyond all that now. She's just too talented to disappear or fail. I'm too busy basking in the glory of the Joanne tour to be pressed about successful girls with lesser vocal range. It's a cute video. So was Katy's. I actually enjoyed Katy's more, lmao.

It could be a reference to Kanye and Kim being able to step in and turn a ton of people against Taylor. The "kingdom" could be the public and the "keys" could be the control. For about a year there, Kim changed the public's reception of Taylor and Taylor was no longer in control of her image. It's not about Beyoncé.
