That's partly the reason BECAUSE it was the 5th single.

Partly, but the bigger factors are: no one who isn't a fan knows what the hell Marry the Night actually means, and the video was far too long and confusing for a lot of people.

Also, this is subjective, but it's also not her catchiest song. (I do love it, though)

I love judas SO MUCH but I canʹt look like a copycat of JLO!!!!

she chose the 2 first singles that were anti-climactic after the hype: BTW, which drew criticism due to EY comparison, and Judas because of its theme and similarity to BR. Still think this whole era would have been so different if MTN and TEOG would have been first and 2nd single, respectively....but I still love the album

I`m agree that she released BTW as the first single, but if she released MTN or TEOG as the second single , it will be #1 easily not top 10 hit for only one week like Judas did.

It would have smashed and things would have panned out very differently for the era. No question.

However, I do agree that BTW was the right first single. Beyond obvious reasons, I think it got the negativity out of the way. Had it come second, it would have tarnished the hype when the album was about to drop...and the effect may not have been totally dissimilar to the Judas drama.

IMO, the ideal would have been:

#1 BTW - Huge hit despite backlash and set up the era well thematically.

#2 TEOG - Win back any lost from BTW, just in time for the album. Big summer smash.

#3 Scheisse - The slight uncommercial-ness would have been forgiven off the back of huge hits like BTW and TEOG.

#4 Y&I (US) - It went down well there.

#4 Judas (Europe) - Meanwhile, the rest of the world jam to Judas.

#5 MTN - Appropriate closer. I don't think this would have been a smash, regardless of single order.

That's partly the reason BECAUSE it was the 5th single.

Well, not exactly. Last friday night was Katy Perry's fifth single too.

The thing about Marry The Night is that it can have several meanings... like many Gaga songs.. Your average radio listener probably just hears a song about a night out and embracing it... but we all know that the song has a deeper meaning. I feel like the 5th single came at a bad time.. Edge of Glory and You and I still saturated airplay and then you add MTN into the mix and obviously stations just wont stop playing 2 other songs which makes it hard for MTN to get much airplay... Marry The Night would not have garnered the Express Yourself comparisons and overall I feel like its Gagas best single to date.. just doesn't have the billboard results to show for it

My single order if I was Gaga

1. Marry The Night

2. The Edge of Glory

3. Hair

4. Americano

5. You and I

I think BTW was still the smart 1st single choice. Better segue for the album.

I feel that TEOG would have been #1 if it was the second single and there was an even bigger distance between it and the BTW single. Still can't get over how rushed the singles were for this album. Had they been spaced out more, we probably could have been getting even more of them, even up to this point.

I love this type of sound for GaGa, it's my favorite song from her EVER, followed by Heavy Metal Lover. It's so dd because I hate pop and i usually only listen to underground EDM, but this song is probably one of the best songs I have ever heard.

Wasn't ever close to my favorite BTW song prior to the BTW Ball, but her live vocals made me appreciate the song in a whole new way.

B4 u start judging me, here me out.

Gaga has been favoring amen fashion lately, I mean, her tumblr is named amen fashion. She tweets about amen fashion almost every other week. And just a few minutes ago, she posted a picture of her performance of amen fashion at the btwball. AND, before the born this way ball, she tweeted about her amen fashion routine. Thoughtz?

(please don't shoot me!!!)
