Like Shape of You was on top for 12 weeks, Closer was on top for just as long, and Uptown Funk was on top for even longer. It's seems was have a longstanding number one every year. So another song could possibly dethrone either Mariah or Despacitno real soon As music success on charts becomes more and more consumer driven, songs will last longer because human psychology prefers songs you know over new songs, and the more times you've heard a song, the more you enjoy it. They've done MRI studies on it. Chart success used to be more or less based on what radio executives guessed the people wanted to hear, and how long they wanted to hear it. As technology has increased to track consumer listening behavior, songs last increasingly longer at #1. Now that streaming is factored in, they'll last longer still. The people have spoken, and they love to hear the same song over and over and over again. I mean, just think of how many times you've listened to lady gaga's songs. My logic is that in the era of streaming it should've been different. Can someone exBlain? I'll only answer the question for Despacito since every song has its own scenario. Despacito has been #1 on the sales chart for 17 weeks and the streaming chart for 13 weeks. An all time record for both charts. Which is why it's staying too long at #1. Not to mention it has no competition, not even close.

You can't compare two songs that were made in different times in this case. Mariah > Despacito for sure but Despacito is definitely a kind of good song when compared to other songs by some of the homophobic Hip Hop artists or mumble rappers. It kinda deserves a good chart position in today's context.
