Trump is trying to fix it as we speak. You can't blame a man who's last name is Trump for something called Obamacare. Well not Trump in particulair but the Republicans have had 7 years to come up with a better system and they failed at it. The Democrats never acted like Obamacare was perfect, but it was better than it was before. The Republicans never even thought of working together with the Democrats to get rid of the flaws. But well maybe I'm to used to coalition politics (Party's actually working together) Before there was love, there was silence

I completely comprehend that knowing history is very important but I think many of us see these monuments as a type of glorification because that was the initial intent in many cases. There are even monuments up North of Confederates... makes no sense considering the North won. I feel like Civil War museums are a better option. The memorials for soldiers exist, etc. As I said before, Germany doesn't need Nazi monuments to remember that horrible phase of their history. I'm not saying that definitely the next generation won't, but perhaps 3, 4, or 5 generations from now might not know about what happened here in the 1860's, because it's considered racist to talk about it and learn it. For example, my sister's school has recently discontinued the history unit on the Civil War because it's offensive to black students. Well why don't we take out the lesson on the Revolutionary War too, for it must be offensive to British people. Let's also take out the lesson on the Armenian Genocide, because it's offensive to Armenians and Armenian students. Do you get what I mean? If we try and shield everyone from being offended, and stop teaching these things, then it will without a doubt in my mind happen again. I don't know when, but it will. THAT'S why we cannot take these statues, museums, etc. down. THAT'S why we cannot stop teaching this material in schools. I don't want these statues to stay standing that way we can praise the Confederate leaders, I wan't these statues to stay standing so that future generations can also see how horrible it was for black people in the 19th century US. I wan't these statues to stay standing so that future generations won't do anything like this ever again. Where was it ever stated, that museums about the Civil War are planned to be closed? Like it was stated already in this thread - those stautues were not built for educational purpose. And neither do those statues show how bad it was for black people in america, nor would a a statue of Hitler in germany show how bad it was for jews in germany. Not at all. That requires very different statues/monuments and I'm all here for creating new ones that would. https://www.last.fm/user/derOlliM

I recently went to Gettysburg National Military Park where, about 150 years ago the bloodiest battle in US history was fought. I saw several statues that you could argue were somewhat praising Confederacy. I didn't view the statues as "oh yeah let's go be slave owners". I viewed it as "Hey, that isn't how it is now, and that seems horrible, so let's try and never have that happen again." I guess it's different for some people, but from what I gather, the general consensus among Americans is that slavery is bad. So if we teach our kids that and they see a statue like that, they will view it as a history lesson and nothing else. currently streaming Zombieboy

All statues in Gettysburg National Military Park are educational but that's only because it's literally the purpose of the park, it's similar to a museum (where most people are ok with things things like this because that's what you expect to see in a museum or a historical protected area). A lone confederate statue in a random street is completely different though.

That's the type of place that statues belong, places like museums and historical sites...not in front of the state capital or the centerpiece of a park in the middle of a city...many of them that had nothing to do with the Civil War. But there are similar cases that I can link you to. Here, this one isn't for the same reasons, but it is similar in the way that they changed curriculum. There probably aren't any articles about it for my sister's school yet because they are starting it for the 2018-2019 school year. This is just the opposite of what you are saying, though. They are going to still teach the Civil War, but they are discounting the role that slavery played in the war by referring to it as a "side issue." I mean, it is Texas...it doesn't surprise me. What city and state do you live in, where you are saying they are changing the curriculum?

Surely you guys can find something else to be pressed about other than Trump's Twitter feed Old thread but I just had to comment. I come from a Muslim country (hell I come from where 15/17 of the terrorists were from) and my mom was still pregnant with me when the attacks happened, but I've had people here (both Saudis and westerners living here) tell me how it was like. People were shocked and terrified. Back then, people thought of the US as a beloved ally and were stunned when the attacks happened. When word came out that 15 of the hijackers were Saudi, people were fast to try to show that we aren't like that, but apparently that seems to have failed. People were sympathetic to the US and Saudis has been fighting Bin Laden since we kicked him out in the 90s. It wasn't until when Iraq was invaded that anti American sentiment started to grow (a huge majority of us aren't death to America fanatics). People were horrified and were afraid that the US might backstab and attack us (the same horrified reaction happened after the Trump election). We weren't celebrating, but were sympathetic and stood with the US. That also seems to be the general reaction for lots of nearby countries.
