GW actually proposed to free many of the men and women who lived on mt Vernon ( his estate) 

It was concluded by his workers (slaves) that they would have been worse off due to the criminal nature that blacks we're treated in the southern states... Further research shows that he never sold any slaves even after the families grew and he had more people than he needed to run his plantation.
