The downfall of Katy Perry - How did it happen?

POP2

Featured Posts

2013 through 2015, Katy Perry was on top the world... Literally. Superbowl performance, countless number ones and plenty of sold out shows. Out of the blue, however, something went wrong, Katy Flopped. This wasn't a normal flop, though, this was a crash and burn. Album sales were low, streams are even lower, her shows are severely undersold, and most people seem to have a strong distaste for her now. How did this happen? I have a couple theories:giggle:

1. Twitter- What started off as jokes turned into an all out war on KP on twitter. Black Twitter came at her for being racist, Swift Twitter followed suit and then everybody else joined in. Social Media is a powerful tool and easily has the power destroy someone's career... It definitely didn't help Kathryn:selena:

2. The Haircut- I honestly look at this as one of her biggest faults. She destroyed something she's commonly known for; her long dark hair. Now she's an easy comparison for the 2013 Miley Cyrus. In attempt to be edgy, Katy fell short and made herself look like a copykat...:trollga: It was more than just a haircut, it was a departure from the Katy Perry everyone loved. People don't like change and Katy just proved that.

3. Bad singles- Chained to the rhythm was good for the fans but wasn't a good radio single, Bon Apple Teeth was :poot: and Swish Swish just wasn't Katy Perry enough. With three singles in a row with lackluster hit potential, Katy set herself up for disaster. When people listen to KP they want to hear feel good bops not edgy trap garbage.

4. Chillary Clinton:diane:- It's cool if you're political but for God's sake don't put your career on the line for it. Hillary wasn't a likable candidate and by aligning herself with her, Katy made herself unlikeable. Gaga did it in a much simpler setting and it worked out in her favor!

5. The Horrible, Uncomfortable, Weird, Awkward Ellen Interview- Simply put, this interview was worse than Tom Cruise jumping up and down on Oprah's couch. Whether she was drugged up or not drugged up enough, Katy Perry gave the most uncomfortable celebrity interview I've ever seen. It honestly seemed like something was wrong with her mentally. Yeah she's Katy Perry but this took her weirdness to another level. Ellen seemed uncomfortable, the crowd seemed weirded out, and viewers weren't fans at all.

6. She changed her music- This goes along with the bad single choices but I felt I needed to elaborate more. Witness as a cohesive album just wasn't that great. The singles were forgettable, the non-singles were even more forgettable and her change in music style caught people by surprise. She just didn't have those strong KP choruses anymore or any strong hook... The album just didn't feel like her music anymore, it was disappointing. :classy:

7. Migos- The one rule of pop music, don't p*ss off the gays. Congrats Katy, you collaborated with homophobes right after accepting a HRC award. Now the gays hate you. :music: Okay that might've been dramatic but still... she made herself look like a hypocrite and that's never good for someone who's already struggling with a dwindling career.

8. Dragqueens and everything else she uses as a trend- Let's be honest, Katy follows the trends. This became clearer than ever after her SNL performance where she essentially used Dragqueens was a prop. It seemed forced and kind of low for her. :what: She's done this before though, so this nothing new.

9. Racism- Going back to number one, Katy is no stranger to a little racism controversy. Let's face it: She kind of exploits other people's cultures. I'm iffy when it comes to cultural appropriation but KP is so blatant and obvious with it that it's almost impossible to ignore it. Corn-rows and watermelon? Kimonos? Dressing up as a jewish man? Racist jokes on Instagram Live? She's her own worst enemy, unfortunately.

10. T Swift- All I'm going to say is, don't start a fight with one of the world's biggest superstars, you'll probably lose:derpga: I don't even like Taylor Swift but I'd be an idiot to think Ms. Perry won that fight. It was a knock down, drag out.

Which one was the final nail on the coffin? Did I miss some of Katy's Prismatic Problematic-ness? Tell me what you think I missed:kara:

Only thing I have to say about this (while I think you made some valid points) is that if you think eating watermelon is cultural appropriation then I may as well be a proud member of the KKK. :poot:

Miley

Honestly she is only known for her hits. That's all. She is a well spoken artist, that likes to make fun of herself which I respect. But that's all to it. She's not respected as an musician, hence why she hasn't won a Grammy yet. What happend now was that she left the generic pop and tried something a little more different. Doesn't work for her sadly. Wish her the best.

The cute thing is, I've seen several self-proclaimed kings/queens of tolerance and fierce oppossers of racism spout or be surrounded by friends that spout: ******, sandnigger, "bombing" jokes relating to muslims, dark skin color and smelling bad etc., in group chats or non-public places.

I am so tired of you guys saying she's flopping, the Witness sales weren't bad at all, her livestream was ICONIC and Swish Swish has been a hit so far :neyde:

You guys just want her to flop so bad that you convinced yourself that she is flopping basically

If you see me posting like crazy, I'm either bored or procrastinating.

She can't do the whole quirky cartoony act anymore, it worked well when she was younger br she needs to be able to adapt and grow.

Saint Hollywood

I think people gave up on her because her sound and image has barely evolved out of pop :gum:

And when she did try to (somewhat) evolve with this era, people didn't care or didn't know about it :deadbanana:

I don't know (or care) where it peaked but it had everyone talking about it + the lyric video was a record-breaking success, that's a hit in my book
