ShockPop 7,747
So much potential lost by a few mis-steps. Perfect illusion was not right for this era. We should have started with DH (with a slightly less raw vocal) then onto MR. Her country aesthetic was good to start but should have mixed more with a hippie aesthetic as Angel Down, Hey girl, CTM & JAD call for it. Finishing with single 2 was a mistake also. Hopefully she puts out another before the tour ends and revamps the tour (setlist) to show it and continues around the globe.

I hear what you're saying about the single choices but I politely disagree. I do admit that for the charts and to kick off the era that Perfect Illusion wasn't the right choice. However it was the right choice in that the trilogy of songs that were given videos told a story about her life and what she was feeling and going through at the time. When you think of who an artist is, they share their soul through their art. It's not about the money and what people think. She wanted to be authentic this time around and I think she chose right. I love the fact she didn't do full on promo like she normally would and took the time to be a normal girl while working on other projects that were what she wanted to do and not what somebody ordered her to do. But the Superbowl was a smart move because it did more than enough to boost her reputation. Her tour sold out because of that. I do agree that not enough effort was put into the aesthetics. At the tour last night for example there were hints of the country style and the hippie style with the flowers on the bridges but it came across as lame because there wasn't enough attention to detail. It was far too subtle and it ended up as a mish mash of different themes and no consistency. So I agree that the country theme was great to start with. I hope she has more time to work on the next era and really think about what she wants. I praise her as an artist but sometimes it feels like she's not fully committed and gets bored too easily and quickly moves on to other things. Sorry it's so long. If you read it all then thanks . GoldenPonyboy 2,398
as a whole, the era was satisfying. i was not as hyped as i was during the BTW era but that's a given as reaching that type of high in a career is very rare. what I appriciate more after the cheek to cheek era are her live performances. she is a way better vocalist now more than ever. Correct me if i'm wrong (I did not check out the JWT videos, just what i heard), she's not using as much playback as she used to and still sounds great. although I would have loved better video's (besides John Wayne they were good, just not gaga quality you know), the rest of the era was awesome. Musically, the era stands above the fame, ARTPOP and cheek to cheek.
JohnnyVersace 8,994
I'm just excited for what's next tbh. Joanne was necessary for her I think, and clearly she's onto something more artistic and intense after seeing this tour and Coachella, which is really exciting. Plus, ASTIB and potentially more acting gigs are going to let us see more of the evolution of her career. But overall, I loved the music, 2/3 videos, and her live performances. Bring on whatever's next!
