Her voice that she used in the TF era and a bit in the TFM era was a special affect she put on; she used a sing a ton through her nose to make it sound more "pop".  I'm pretty sure the voice she's used from BTW on is much more natural to her and easier to sing with (hence why it sounds more operatic and theatrical, but also sometimes more shrill or throaty).

Exactly. It was more through her nose, and now it comes from right down in her throat, which is much better technique. I sometimes miss that really feminine quality too, but I know that she's singing in a way now that is actually better for her health. I have come to love her new techniques though. It's less Britney-pop and more classic meets metal (which is obviously influenced by her jazz era).

And of course we have to mention the smoking and drugs... during the ARTPOP era when she was smoking joints all day long every day for a few years straight (that's a f.uckload of damage), I'm pretty sure she couldn't hit notes the same way anymore and was losing her voice. It was when she started training to sing jazz that I think she learned how to use her 'new voice' and to work around the damage that was done. Which means that she can sing better and more controlled than ever, but it's changed forever. She might not even be able to sing with that quality anymore. I hear it come back in little snippets, but I don't think she's ever gonna sound like she did during BTW again.

I'll be myself until they fūcking close the coffin.

the lady is a master at manipulating the tone and timbre of her voice. imo it's where she really stands out as a vocalist.  especially in those one off performances she'll have fun with the whole overall gestalt of a song, she can sound like a 40 year old smoker or a trained stage performer or a sultry lounge singer. even inside of  one song she will shift her voice in the middle of a line to give a different nuance or effect. she hasn't lost anything, she's just trying new things.  she's honestly taken a lot of slack where she should have been recognized as a unique talent in many ways. I think her recent energy has been focused on trying to present the voice of a more classically trained vocalist. it's all gold. she's a master.  her talent is frightening.

I get what you mean 100%

But deeper voices can also be pleasant, she just needs to master it more

Are you trying to imply that everyone who says her voice sounds "unpleasant" isn't a wannabe vocal expert :toofunny:

I don't think anyone is really suggesting/implying that she has the best voice in the world.

There are just a lot of different opinions on her different sounds. I think it's more interesting than other "debates" or whatever on GGD because there are more than two ways to look at this topic.  Much more interesting than DIC vs A-Yo topics.

Another good example is the angel down worktape. It seems to happen more when she sings slowly and draws out each syllable and note.

I think a lot of people responding don't really understand what the op is referring to. Its not about her voice sounding deep, its that open throat sound. I don't know how else to describe it. (Unless I am confused, which is possible )  can anyone find videos of others singers singing this way?

I noticed the change of her technique since ARTPOP, she used to sing in a popish voice but then she decided to use her full potential... I do like both ways tbh, cuz, when she is singing jazz that full deep voice sounds awesome, as well as when she is singing the Joanne songs.
