Lust For Life: One step further or one step back?

Step forward. It's much more solid than Honeymoon and, whilst not as spectacular as Ultraviolence, it's damn near close enough. It's refreshing to have her write about different things, both thematically and lyrically, and to have sonic landscape that is different from the other albums too.

I love both but I think I need to listen LFL a little more before saying it's better than Honeymoon. There's something new on LFL: the folk sound! I think the whole album is everything she has done right combined. Honeymoon is totally unique

Lol at ANYONE thinking Honeymoon is Lana's magnum opus. Born To Die is too iconic for that to be true (and Ultraviolence for that matter).

But anyway, Lust for Life is a masterpiece and a step forward from Honeymoon in my opinion.

OT: Definitely a step forward, it's classic Lana but she wrote on a lot of themes and styles that she hasnt done too much with before. Not to mention the overall production has a lot of electronic and hip-hop influences

This. I love it but it's by far her least cohesive album, it's literally like listening to 4 EPs. And it's her worst productionwise. But the melodies are so pretty

Lust for life somehow manages to make a lot of the songs sound so simalar to each other yet be cohesive

I always have to let a Lana album sink in for a few days. I'm like that with literally all her releases, so I can't say for sure one way or the other yet. Looking at how I've rated every song so far, it looks like it's her weakest album...but I know that can't be right because I've connected with it on a deeper level than I did Honeymoon, which I considered to be her weakest. I think I'm just going to have to let it marinade for a while. Some of the new stuff connects immediately, other stuff is a bit long and just doesn't strike me the way her older stuff did.

I think it's a step forward in terms of theme. She's no longer just singing about sugar daddies and being sad anymore. She's bringing up stuff she never did previously, like politics, which have been some of the most revelatory songs on the record. She's collaborating more, bringing in outside influences that work brilliantly with her voice. Normally, I'd be against this many collabs on a pop album, particularly someone like Lana, who's always existed on the periphery between pop and indie. But they work so well that I don't mind. I feel the songs really develop as well, adding in new twists in turns, both in lyrics and instrumentals. I don't think there's any notable step backs taken. She's trying more new things which is always welcome. Her albums are always different from the last, no matter how subtle, so two fingers up to anyone who says all her work sounds the same.

LFL is everything Lana in one album. From BTD to Honeymoon in just one album. It's a great body of work and it truly showcases how talented.

"Get Free" feels like a summary and conclusion to the last four albums and looking forward to the future.

I'm still deciding  I think expectations were too high with this one, specially after those singles. And the album is a lot more than that.

 

I think it's a step forward just because it's, like many have said, a great compilation of Lana's range of sounds and songs. She kind of incorporated a bit of every past album in Lust For Life. And, in the end, it still sounds pretty cohesive.

I still think Ultraviolence is her Magnum Opus though.

I think that sonically, lust for life is somewhere in between ultraviolence and honeymoon. I can really feel her emotions coming through in this new album and I think it has a lot of heart in it and purpose to it. So I think it's a step forward
