I wouldn't call a season that mixed an insane asylum, genetic experimentation/mutation, alien abduction, a possessed nun, a sadistic santa killer, another sadistic serial killer, and an angel of death simple or straightforward. Okay so maybe simple is not the right word But Asylum still had a much clearer plot compared to Freak Show for example. At the end of the day it was essentially Lana Winters vs. Bloody Face. The alien thing is 100% unnecessary tho, but it didn't distract from the plot too much to ruin it. And the other things you mentioned don't seem too unrealistic for an insane asylum imo. It clicks. The serial killers (it's an asylum) experimentation (it actually happened in places like that) demon possession (the asylum is run by nuns, of course the devil needs to come) and the Angel of Death is also related to religion. And it was simply better executed. Plus Asylum got a real ending. Freak Show's ending was basically "We don't know where to take this season now and we only have one episode left so let's have the guy kill everyone" Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

It's been theorised that Twisty will invade the dreams of children in a similar way that Freddy did in Nightmare On Elm Street. A cult will also be involved. So we do know a lot about the plot and have done for a few months now, so the "theme" is a neighbourhood setting, but according to you the plot is messy.
