What people don't get is how much deeper this is than "Oh, it's just an innocent preference based on a physical trait"

^This is sociological.

 

We see from studies that on dating apps:

* White men get more replies from almost every group.

*Black men and women get the lowest response rates to their messages.

 

Peoples preconceived notions of black men and white men, stereotypes, eurocentric standards of beauty are among the factors that lead to these differences.

 

There seems to be some weird idea that because it's subconscious, and people can't control it, their fetishised ideas of race can't be racist or problematic. Like... Sure you can't control who you're attracted to but your sexuality didn't develop in some bubble that's void of any influence from the complex relationships we have with race in the outside world.

Maybe somebody can fetishise race in a very dehumanizing way, in a way that reduces the complexity of a person and makes them seen as two-dimensional, and have no control over their sexual fantasies.

Maybe somebody can be influenced by a society that sees whiteness as attractive and blackness as unattractive and also internalize those racist ideals through no fault of their own.

Lets just all stop pretending that because something is subconscious or because an individual 'can't help' who they are attracted to their 'preferences' can't be racist and harmful.

It's clearly a race issue, we can see clearly from the data that this is a sociological phenomenon, the fetishisation or idolization of certain races is problematic, people's dating 'preferences' can be racist and discriminatory I also think it's easy for many people here to dismiss this as a non issue while not having to face the realities of dating while black.
