Joanne is not about Joanne

Eversince Joanne was released, I saw a lot of posts mocking the concept and saying "oh she did an album about her dead aunt which includes a song about masturbating".

But just because the album is called Joanne doesn't mean the whole album is about her... Joanne is a symbol. She represents her family, her roots, because if there's one thing that affected her family, that's Joanne's death. The album is about - spoiler alert - being her father's daughter, sister's sister, friend's friend etc. What did being Joe's and Cynthia's daughter bring her ? How has it made her the woman she is today ? This is what she wanted to talk in this album. And she couldn't talk about that without mentioning Joanne, because she was the source of everything and her life and her family's life would have been different if Joanne hadn't had this fate.

Actually a lot of songs are more about her dad than her aunt (Diamond Heart, John Wayne, Sinner's Prayer...). But that's not everything. She wanted to talk about herself, the woman who lives her life, outside of the celebrity. The woman who loves, has fun but also suffers, and above all, who knows she's not perfect and has sins but tries to be a good person day after day. There's a reason why Joanne is her middle name. It's a reminder for her to always keep the important things in mind. That's why a part of the album is more political.

Who is Gaga inside, what's at the bottom of her heart ? What would she be if you took away all she has, the fame, money, glory, fans ? Who is she without all of the outside things ? That was the concept of Joanne.

So now we know she masturbates when she's alone, but that won't happen due to Christian Carino, so it might get removed from the setlist. :selena:

I can already imagine Gaga explaining Dancin' in Circles, if somebody asked her if the song really belongs on the album.

"Dancin' is Circle is my way of giving Joanne the rebellious days that she never got to have. She died when she was 19, you know, and she never had a boyfriend, she never masturbated, she never got to experience the things we enjoy and take for granted. It's my way of giving her the chance to be this modern woman that she never got the chance to be. It's like, when I was in the studio, I really felt her presence in this song more then ever, she was saying to me 'Hell yeah, feels good to be alive."

I mean, her middle name is Joanne. If anything, the record is purely about herself, more autobiographic than any of her records ever before.

IMO if you like the album or not would be a pretty good indicator on whether you would actually get along with Gaga in real life, because this records is the essence of her without any of the masquerade.

REALITY

Totally agree :applause:

She even said that Joanne was "Lady Gaga without the fame"—or something to that effect.

Joanne was obviously a very important figure in Gaga and her family's life, and she wanted to express a more genuine and authentic side of herself—not to say that her past albums didn't.

I mean, she even said that Joanne was full of autobiographical stuff, so it's definitely more about Gaga than it is Joanne. That said, Joanne was the one who inspired her to make such an album like this one.

I thought this was an actual Gaga quote :sharon:

androiduser, sis, you shouldn't project your own romantic life onto Gaga's aunt :diane:

Talent

Duh. It's an intimate album herself, her soul and heart.

🔵 - Banned because I quoted a stupid meme. Literally. So, yeah.

This is interesting, I didn't think about that ! Liking the music is a matter of taste I think, but the lyrics, the meaning and the soul she put behind it, yes it would be a good indicator.

She even said it's more than just her dead aunt. It's her middle name. It's right between the Italian girl raised in New York, Stefani, and the global pop sensation, Lady Gaga.

Gaga said herself the album is not a concept album where each song fits into an overall theme a la TFM/BTW

I agree with this, an album doesn't have to be conceptual to be cohesive.
