The point of it was to continue promoting ARTPOP after the drama with her management. The song was released but people were just not interested in Gaga at that time I guess. Had she not released it fans would still be like "Omg not releasing GUY was her biggest mistake, it had so much potential to be one of her biggest hits!" And it's something you see with Dancin' In Circles as well and something that happened to Marry The Night. Oh honey I can attest I remember being on Littlemonsters.com (that's little monster dot com *wink*) and everybody was on the hype train for GUY being a single, that or MANiCURE Uh Red Wine... whore 11,447
The point was because Gaga wanted to give a gift to the fans after many broken promises from the era, hence the three part video.

I live for that song and video! 34 minutes ago, MonsterJay said: THIS!!! I was rooting for Sexxx Dreams but all I kept seeing was "OMG G.U.Y WILL SLAY THE CHARTS". Then when she released it...well...we all know what happened Still think it was a poor single choice I still don't understand how G.U.Y flopped, it's everything 🔥🔥🔥 I remember anxiously waiting to see it live at the artrave, Donutella would have slayed, but maybe not since guy flopped but I would take those any day before sexxxdreams, tho the chorus is lit, I think the gp would have been confused about the sung and spoken verses lol and they get a bit boring. ChvVolk 2,303
Gypsy was the real smash waiting to happen, even the albums sticker promoted it before the 2nd single was fully confirmed.

Well at the time the top hit songs were Happy by Pharrell Williams, Dark Horse by Katy Perry, and All of Me by John Legend essentially all of them are GP friendly with Dark Horse being that approachable trap song that all the soccer moms can enjoy. GUY is too edm for it to be released in 2014 and honestly the public has a fickle taste in songs. Uh Red Wine... Convict... Gah Gah...
Ariana Grindr 3,173
ARTPOP dream single list: 1. ARTPOP (like seriously??? A no brainer) 2 Do What U Want ft. Xtina (R Kelly seriously?!?! ) 3 Venus 4 G.U.Y 5 Gypsy 6 Applause 👏🏽 (Why would you start your era with a perfect era ending single...why?!?!) guaranteed 4-5 number one singles and million Grammys

She hit pretentiousness when she did the three resurrections and stormed the headquarters of the executive suits. The only good part was the scenery in the beginning where she's a fallen angel but then it went down hill.
Roman 2,860
Gaga knew her fanbase were extremely disappointed and sad because of the mishaps (no music videos, she herself went silent for a while in the middle of the era) so she made us a present to properly close off the ARTPOP era, apart from the tour. That's all. And it was a great single choice, the thing is, nobody cared about Gaga anymore at that point except her die-hard fans who managed to live through ARTPOP mdr

It was a little underwhelming in production, though as a whole it is perhaps her most conceptual.
itsjustlucarifc 126
The last thing I will add, it seems as if Gaga has been following a pattern as of late with both "ARTPOP" and "Joanne." Both planned second singles were replaced with promotional tracks: "Venus" with "Do What U Want" & "A-YO" with "Million Reasons." Though not the second single per say, you could counter in "The Edge Of Glory" too, though to the best of my knowledge the third single had yet to be chosen and "Hair" was fighting for the same promotional track turned single. Perhaps in order to avoid the unfortunate "Marry The Night"/"G.U.Y" trend, Gaga has been very opposed to squeezing out a third single from "Joanne" as not to have it fare the same fate. Off topic, but really "Joanne" kind of has come to a close in its entirety/progression. Both "John Wayne" and "A-YO" could have been forced radio singles but as to avoid the possibility of failure, Gaga's management refrained despite releasing a video. I think more importantly, post-"The Cure" Gaga and her management now realize that forced-singles are no longer the thing and instead choose to allow the GP to pick. If you wanted to get real statistical, "Eh, Eh (Nothing Else I Can Say" could really be the first TRUE sign of forced singles being unpopular amongst the GP.
