Jay-Z accused of anti-semitism

"After being accused of anti-Semitism for lyrics on his new album, the Anti-Defamation League, an organization working to combat anti-Semitism, has expressed concerns over a line in Jay’s song, “The Story of O.J.,” from his newly released album, “4:44.”

In the song, he raps: “You wanna know what’s more important than throwin’ away money at a strip club? Credit / You ever wonder why Jewish people own all the property in America? This how they did it.”

A representative for the ADL told Rolling Stone they believed the lyric is problematic because it “does seem to play into deep-seated anti-Semitic stereotypes about Jews and money.”

“The idea that Jews ‘own all the property’ in this country and have used credit to financially get ahead are odious and false,” the rep continued, noting, “such notions have lingered in society for decades, and we are concerned that this lyric could feed into preconceived notions about Jews and alleged Jewish ‘control’ of the banks and finance.”

The organization does not, however, think Jay’s intent was to offend Jewish people or promote anti-Semitism, as they added, he “is someone who has used his celebrity in the past to speak out responsibly and forcefully against the evils of racism and anti-Semitism.”

Well, let's see what would happen if a country artist said ______ about Jay-Z and black people. Works both ways.

Edit: Jay should know better than to write lyrics generalizing and stereotyping other groups of people. This doesn't help the cause.

That comment doesn't make any sense? So it's okay in your opinion that Jay-Z has an anti-semitic line?

And since when are country artists Jewish?

This is messy. Don't they usually play their albums for record executives etc. Nobody on his team thought it would be a dumb and offensive thing to say on his album :laughga: whew...

I'm referring to people who will take this over the top.

I'm saying that people will be mad that people were mad about the defamation. But if this were about a country artist making assumptions about another group of people, Jay-Z, it would be a different story.

I never said country artists are Jewish.

isn't he already his own boss as of now? Like somebody would tell him that what he's doing is wrong, even though it is! :madge:

Finally. I was wondering when this would take hold. I'd be outraged if it didn't. I saw the video 2 days ago for the first time and when I heard that line, my jaw literally dropped. I am appalled that he thought that was ok to say, even more appalled that no one hearing this song stopped him from using that line. What he says is 100% unacceptable and I'm not even Jewish. This is one of the biggest stereotypes that Jews have to fight against all the time - that they're greedy and own all the banks and property. I don't personally know anyone who's Jewish who fits this description, so this concept has always baffled me. You know, Tyra Banks once invited a racist family onto her show who, while I'm unsure of whether they were actually in the KKK or not, did talk about burning crosses. And it was sick how the parents had programmed these kids to spout racist ideology. One of the things they said was that they hated Jewish people, that they're greedy and they steal. This is little kids saying this. Now, imagine if kids hear lyrics that support this same concept in a song that can be listened to through the internet, all over the world? This is appalling behaviour, it needs to be called out and stopped.

That country artist would not be allowed to get away with it. We'd be calling for their head on a stick and rightly so. Racism can't fly under the radar like it used to. Contrary to popular belief, white people are not allowed to say racist things and get away with it, even among other white people. It's hardwired into us not to say this stuff unless you're a racist with a low IQ, no filter and no self-awareness. Not for a minute is anyone suggesting that a black artist should suffer worse backlash than a white person for the same thing. They're just seeing a piece of problematic behaviour and calling them out on it. The same is done for whites. I really hope you're not saying that what Jay said was correct and justified because it's not. Equal treatment is holding everyone to the same standard. You can't say offensive stuff no matter what race you are and you should suffer the same consequences for saying that offensive stuff no matter what race you are. Simple.

I'm saying that Jay should know better considering the black community is constantly getting stereotyped.

If this were about another minorities there would be a way more outrage. But I see GGD SJW's didn't even care to enter here :selena:

I understand that but you also insinuated that a white artist saying something racist about blacks would be justified or not even mentioned. That was what I was referring to and pointing out that it's untrue.

The ADL had a problem with Jay's lyrics.

In support of the ADL I'm saying that Jay should know better considering the same lyrical issue of defamation could've happened against him or any other black artist.

a white artist saying something racist about blacks would be justified or not even mentioned.

How could an artist saying something racist not be mentioned? Doesn't it have to be mentioned in order for it to be racist?

I never said a white person saying racists remarks about black people is okay.

Wtf? Like what the actual ****? How is it right for him to say that? Did he think before writing this line and rapping it? :saladga:

And the fact that he'll get zero backlash for this :madge:

I think he meant to say that people are throwing their money away, and then wonder where all their money went. It's still really really touchy, but I don't think it's as bad as people are letting on.

This kitten over here (meow)
