darkchylde 14,857 Posted July 6, 2017 Share Posted July 6, 2017 Produced by Ryan Lewis (1/2 of the Macklemore thing), probably around the time she got around with Macklemore , "Praying" was written by Kesha, Ryan Lewis and Ben Abraham (australian indie singer i can't find anything relevant on). The song obviously talks about her experience in the music industry until now, specifically about her contract with Dr. Luke, the abuse she suffered from him and the legal battle she had to fight before being able to release music like this. The production is pretty minimal until the middle of the song when, matching her vocals, it reaches full power and rawness. The lyrics and vocals are obviously the best part of the song: while she does not forgive the person she sings about, she still gives them the chance to become better after paying for what theyve done. The verses and chorus are full of passive-agressive chants on this. "I hope you find your peaceFalling on your knees, praying" This line is obviously more about hoping they fall and find peace after so than about hoping they pray. In the bridge, she settles for more kindful words without taking responsability away from the harm he's done "Oh, sometimes, I pray for you at night Someday, maybe you'll see the light Oh, some say, in life, you're gonna get what you give But some things, only God can forgive" Considering Dr. Luke worked to destroy her body and mind until she was ill and hurt, i see this not only as merciful but also the triumphant chant she deserves after working so hard for her freedom, truth and integrity. "Praying" meets the expectations of both those who were fans and those who weren't because while it's still what fans knew Kesha was able and talented enough to produce, it's also fresh enough for those who didn't know her so well. Well, it's obviously all about opinions, I believe this is not only a great song but also a major pop history moment and it could be huge. I know everyone's standards for SOTY are different so we can't really discuss on that but I hope everyone can appreciate this for the big thing it is.
