When, as is the case with Katy Perry, you come from a hegemonic culture and a hegemonic industrie, and you portray a culture, as she did, as a caricature, completely out of context, and without leaving space for the people who actually belong in that culture to have any say in it, then you're not appreciating anything. You're straight up ripping it off and apropriating it. Cultures are not all existing in harmony. Theres one dominant western eurocentred culture which for centuries undermined, and oppressed and colonized pretty much every other culture. Those cultures are irreversibly damaged by those historical processes and trying their best to rebuild themselves based on their traditions, their social and political contexts. So it's not okay for Katy Perry, the quintessence of current western eurocentred culture, to take the whole of complex, multidimensional, unbelievably rich japanese culture and reduce it to some costumes, make up and stage props in search for viewers. I think this is different because he is not directly telling/making fun of anyone that has had a family member or someone they know die in the holocaust. If we are going to use this train of thought is it ok to make a joke about someone who got run over by a car? Of course it is. Is it ok to tell a joke like that to someone whos recently lost a familymember/friend to an accident like that? Probably not, that would be a shitty thing to do just like if Pewdiepie directed this at someone personally. Hands up to the sky, I'm about to fly!
