holy scheisse 22,254
So after all this time what are yalls thoughts on the debacle of a generation? Do you think Gaga and Garibay jnew it sounded like express yourself? Is it possible they could have not heard that iconic song before making the new national anthem? I just heard express yourself in Wawa (shout-out if you know what Wawa is) and honestly ... The resemblance is uncanny. Back in the day I think I was biased and said noooo they don't sound alike at all blah blah blah. But it's literally the same chord progression. Also both songs are self empowerment anthems. I can't help but wonder... How did they not see that coming? Was it a mistake? It arguably was the controversy that set her peak into a plummit bc it overshadowed the song I'm some ways. Despite all this, I like born this way as a song better. What do you guys think?

John Slayne 4,154
I know BTW was a historic moment but deep down in my heart I love EY more
MaryJaneHolland 77,348
I think they did know the song sounds alike, but probably thought no one will notice. Hence why Gaga tried sugarcoating it from the start saying that the song was sent to Madonna and she loved it. I don't think they aim was to rip off Express Yourself tho. Here's this video, which claims that the songs sound alike, if you speed up EY. But does that make sense? Many songs would sound like each other if you change one's speed to make it same as the other one's. I don't know if you're getting my point. I guess there are a couple similar vocal moments, but that's all. They tried the same with Papa Don't Preach/Perfect Illusion, but again it was the same key or something. Many songs have the same key/vocal level (or however it's called professionally).
OBEY 57,109
I never listened to express yourself in full and didnt know the song before BTW was released. i do hear a little similarity though
Bellatrix 34,783
I prefer Express Yourself. It's such an iconic song Lose control. Let go and fall. Do you get the satisfaction?
sipthistea 21,099
I prefer Super Bass. Those 2 songs are basic and boring, sorry
Eurotrash 1,621
Still to this day, I hear no similarities.

Ricardo 7,809
I'll be fair, since the first day I listened to BTW I associated it to EY, dunno exactly what it is but I believe is the "bell sound" I don't know BUT I don't think it was true when people said BTW was a blatantly rip off because they still sound different
Lady Palutena 3,147
I still don't think they sound similar and I still believe that Born This Way is superior. Adoremus in caelum, Palutena. Dea luminis.
Yuuri 21,636
I'd rather listen to BTW, it fits with so many people where as EY is a female empowerment song that the gays have adopted as part of their culture, yeah BTW doesn't have the best message as it tells you to embrace labels but you take what you get. Omg thank you so much for posting this, I spent 6 years trying to find out what people ment with saying "their chord progression is similar", and this video finally made me hear it Happiness will never last, darkness comes to kick your ass... ᵃˢˢ 🕺
